B. Goren. Posted November 6, 2004 Report Posted November 6, 2004 Miles at Birdland 1951 The sound of this CD is terrible. I returned back to the store where I bought it. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted November 6, 2004 Report Posted November 6, 2004 A couple of orders: Two Australian discs recommended by Kenny Weir over at the Other Place: ALLAN BROWNE QUINTET - CYCLOSPORIN JAMIE OEHLERS - THE ASSEMBLERS And the new disc by one of the most distinctive jazz singers operating in the UK today (she's actually from Dublin, but works here): Christine Tobin - Romance and Revolution Quote
pryan Posted November 8, 2004 Report Posted November 8, 2004 Miles at Birdland 1951 The sound of this CD is terrible. I returned back to the store where I bought it. If you can get past the sound quality, there is some mighty fine playing on this disc. Sonny Rollins, J.J., Eddie 'Lockjaw' Davis, and more. I like it muchly. Quote
pryan Posted November 8, 2004 Report Posted November 8, 2004 Today I picked up the following, all Lps: Anthony Braxton: MONTREUX/BERLIN CONCERTS Woody Shaw: MASTER OF THE ART Miles Davis: AT CARNEGIE HALL 1961 Kenny Burrell: ELLINGTON IS FOREVER Quote
Enterprise Server Posted November 10, 2004 Report Posted November 10, 2004 I've been wanting to buy this recording for almost thirty years! Finally got around to it! Quote
jazzbo Posted November 10, 2004 Report Posted November 10, 2004 I ordered some speaker cables. . . guess that's neither here nor there, but it's going to mean fewer cds til after the holidays! Quote
mikeweil Posted November 11, 2004 Report Posted November 11, 2004 The mailgirl brought me this morning: Greg Osby, Inner Circle Richie Beirach, The Snow Leopard Franz Xaver Richter, Flute Sonatas on period instruments (very fine performance) Georg Brodmann - Musica Sacra (solo percussion, a little overdone at times ) Quote
brownie Posted November 11, 2004 Report Posted November 11, 2004 Was away for one week in the Big Apple. Mostly on business. But took time out to visit several record stores and the WMFU record fair. Bought mostly CDs but found some vinyls including: - Warne Marsh 'Warne Out' on Interplay, - Billy Bang with Charles Tyler 'Rainbow Gladiator' on SoulNote, - Roscoe Mitchell 'Snurdy McGurdy and her Dancin' Shoes' on Nessa (never saw that vinyl before), - Joel Futterman and Jimmy Lyons 'Inneraction' on the privately released JDF label. Never saw that one or the Roscoe Mitchell Nessa vinly before! Quote

Clunky Posted November 11, 2004 Report Posted November 11, 2004 - Warne Marsh 'Warne Out' on Interplay, - how's this one stack up.? Love Marsh like many round here. Is this as cool as the title suggests. Anyone seen this on CD ?? Quote
Claude Posted November 11, 2004 Report Posted November 11, 2004 I finally found "Trio+One", an OOP 1988 David Liebman album on Owl records, with Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette (and Carin Videntin on oboe on a few tracks). I had an Ebay search running on this CD, and after several months one showed up. But I was outbid at more than $20. This time, a seller had a couple of copies of the CD at a buy-it-now price of $8 Quote

GloriousBlues Posted November 12, 2004 Report Posted November 12, 2004 Blue Mitchell - The Thing To Do (Fungii Mama is a great tune. I had only heard Kenny Barron's version of it before tonight.)DJ Shadow - Endtroducing (A serious change of pace for me. Interesting music. Not very lively. I doubt I'll be playing this a lot) Quote
LAL Posted November 12, 2004 Report Posted November 12, 2004 Bought the Miles' Plugged Nickle box a few days ago at a local store. Waited 6 years for this. Hope it's a good 'un as everyone says it is. Quote
brownie Posted November 12, 2004 Report Posted November 12, 2004 - Warne Marsh 'Warne Out' on Interplay, - how's this one stack up.? Love Marsh like many round here. Is this as cool as the title suggests. Anyone seen this on CD ?? Gave this vinyl a quick hearing. It is one that needs much more careful listening to get into all its subtilities. Good to hear Warne Marsh with a bass and drums support. Nick Ceroli was one of the drums masters who was into a lot of stimulating records. Marsh overdubs on tenor on a 'Duet' track. The album seems to have seen a CD reincarnation from Discovery on a reissue going by the name of 'Warne Marsh Groups Noteworthy'. Constantly amazed at the poor showing of albums from Marsh in the record stores especially when you have to go through hundreds of albums by several Marsalises in the same area! Quote
Guy Berger Posted November 14, 2004 Report Posted November 14, 2004 Not today, but my recent purchases have been: Andrew Hill, Eternal Spirit Gateway Trio, Gateway 2 Jan Garbarek, Triptykon Duke Ellington, Early Ellington (Thanks to Lon for recommending this... I'm glad I picked it up) Ludwig van Beethoven, Great Pianists of the 20th Century: Alfred Brendel II (includes Hammerklavier & Op. 111 sonatas, Diabelli Variations) Stan Getz, Complete Roost Recordings Charles Lloyd, Dream Weaver (replacing my low quality MP3s) McCoy Tyner, Tender Moments Quote
jazzbo Posted November 14, 2004 Report Posted November 14, 2004 Alright! I love that Early Ellington, and I'm glad you picked it up and are enjoying it! Today I lucked out on a rare used cd excursion and found all six of the Charlie Haden "Montreal Tapes" on Verve cheap! Quote
