Herb Ellis -- "Nothing But the Blues"

That's a great one, paps! I'm mad about Roy Eldridge's playing in the 50s. He's also fantastic on Mingus and Roach's Newport Rebels.

I've coveted that one for a while. Spurred to act by King Ubu, if I recall correctly, in another thread. Looking forward to it.

Just spinning my vinyl copy. Pleased to see Track 1 is called "Pap's Blues"! Note for Sidewinder: Bought this Japanese Verve re-issue in 1984 from Dobell's at their final resting place in a back street in Covent Garden. It was my one and only purchase from those premises; I never managed to find them again before they folded. Their inaccessibility was doubtless a factor in their collapse!

Ugghh. I knew I should've bought this one when I saw it in Chicago. <_<

I vaguelly remember that place at that time - it was just off the route from my daily walk from Charing Cross Station to Bloomsbury (University area). If I remember right, there wasn't too much modern jazz in there. 'Honest Jons' in the vicinity (near Cambridge Circus I think) had more of the modern stuff.

I have a couple of test pressings on Doug Dobell's '77' label picked up some years ago for £2 each from the late, lamented Mole jazz. One of those is a Pete Brown.

Another one he arranged/funded of course was the Joe Harriott 'Swings High' on Melodisk. Most of the copies of that one must have been sold in the shop.

Mosaic Select: Charles Tolliver

Inspired or prompted by Mosaic's recent sudden shortage of sets and as a witness to the quickly escalating prices of those sets, I ordered this one to assure myself of no future regrets. While I'm pretty certain I'll like it, I haven't heard a whole lot of talk on this one. We'll see how it goes in about 4-5 days.

I took advantage of an unexpected day off to hit a local record store I hadn't visited for a while. I walked out with a bunch of vinyl - I had never even heard of the first three albums:

Stanley Turrentine - Another Story (Blue Note w/ Thad Jones from 1969)

Artie Shaw & His Gramercy Five - Sequence in Music (Verve w/ Farlow & Hank Jones)

Khan Jamal - Infinity (Jam'Brio w/ Byard Lancaster & Sunny Murray)

Muhal Richard Abrams - Live at Montreux 1978 (Arista Novus)

Woody Shaw - Night Music (Elektra Musician promo copy)

Blue Mitchell - Step Lightly (Blue Note Classic series)

Willie Bryant/Jimmie Lunceford (Bluebird double)

The Oympia Brass Band of New Orleans (Audiophile)

Dave Brubeck - The Riddle (Columbia 6-eye)

Johnny Hodges - Rippin' & Runnin' (Verve),

And I put a bunch of stuff back!

Beatles REVOLVER, Capitol mono, for $2. Sounds like it got some good use in the last 40 years, but for $2 to be able to watch that Capitol label swirl around while listening to "Tomorrow Never Knows"..... NOW I know what Sangrey was talking about when he mentioned AM-quality sound!
