mikelz777 Posted May 21, 2008 Report Posted May 21, 2008 (edited) I have all his Prestiges so I'm adding to my Jackie McLean collection by picking up some of his Blue Notes. Plus, these happened to be going for only $6.59 at Tower and four of them would qualify for free shipping. I'm hoping these will cap off my buying spree. Household finances are tightening to the point of having to cut out several luxuries and CD-buying is one of them. Jackie McLean - A Fickle Sonance, Capuchin Swing, New Soil and Bluesnik. poetrylover3 Posted May 24, 2008 Report Posted May 24, 2008 Freddie Hubbard: Sky Dive; First Light; Straight Life. Straight Life was a disappointment on my first playing of it. First Light is lyrical and well worth the money-it merits a second listen today. Sky Dive is up next. Charles Mingus: Let My Children Hear Music. Classic Mingus. VSOP: The Quintet. A classic Miles rhythm section with Freddie Hubbard in the trumpet slot. I'm a big fan of this group. It still sounds as great as it did when first released. Clifford Brown/Max Roach. The Blues Walk, Joy Spring. Great bop, great Clifford. The Lester Young Mosaic Box. I've only listened to Disc 1 so far and the set is up to Mosaic's high standards-excellent audio quality and a great booklet! Immortal music. Quote

montg Posted May 30, 2008 Report Posted May 30, 2008 I was in Chicago recently, made the obligatory stop at Jazz Record Mart. The prices may be a little high, but the atmosphere is priceless (while I was shopping I heard one worker tell another that "Cuscuna just called, he wants you to call back'). Jimmy Smith's Live at the Baby Grand was playing while I was shopping, sounded realy good so I picked that up. I also picked up Warne Marsh, All Music. And the magazine Stop Smiling. stop smiling mag Quote

The Magnificent Goldberg Posted May 31, 2008 Report Posted May 31, 2008 The packaging is a little odd: two CD single cases & booklet in a box. The single cases seem to be arranged backwards, with the label of the CD being the thing that has the detail. When you pull them out of the box, they appear to be upside down, so you turn them every which way to work out what you're looking at. Oh, the music? I'm listening to disc 1 and am on #10, the first one I didn't already have. And that's fine. There won't be a problem with the music, y'know. I hadn't realised there was another 2 disc set of Keletigui & ses Tambourins. I had better get that soon. MG Quote

mikelz777 Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 I went on a bit of a buying spree at Berkshire Records Outlet in anticipation of a CD-buying moratorium. The nine titles below are part of the "Hip Jazz-Bop" series put out by 1201 Music. They put together compilations of American artists in Europe during the '50's and '60's from the vaults of British label, Black Lion. They're populated by a virtual who's who in jazz: Dexter Gordon, Thelonious Monk, Sonny Stitt, Ben Webster, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Kenny Dorham, Zoot Sims, Bob Brookmeyer, Lee Konitz, and Miles Davis among many others. They were only $2.99 a pop so I figured, "Why not?". They'll be nice to throw on when I can't decide on one particular artist to listen to. (Continued on next post.) Quote
mikelz777 Posted June 3, 2008 Report Posted June 3, 2008 The titles below were only $3.99 ea. so I couldn't resist picking up some Howard McGhee, Lucky Thompson and Kenny Clarke. Overall, a pretty nice haul averaging only $3.83 per disc after shipping. Quote
paul secor Posted June 4, 2008 Report Posted June 4, 2008 I Like Be I Like Bop - Early American & European Bebop Violin (AB Fable) Some of the artists on this 2 disc compilation would seem to fall into the swing rather than bebop category, but screw categories. This 2 disc set includes a lot of artists that I'm unfamiliar with or am only fleetingly familiar with, so I'm looking forward to listening. Quote
