brownie Posted July 2, 2004 Report Posted July 2, 2004 (edited) Bought a number of stillsealed recent Fresh Sounds releases at a recordshop which specializes in recycling CDs. They were on sale at €8 each (about $9). I have yet to these CDs on sale at regular stores here. What I don't understand about these items is that many of them bear pricetags from Tower. The Sonny Criss With GeorgeArvanitas CD has a $14,99 tag. Strange that Spanish releases make their way into Paris discounts stores viw the USA. I'll let others figure it out! I'll enjoy the music. Horace Silver - Song for My Father I'm spinning the Monk right now, and I'm already wondering how I got along without it. I expect to have the same reaction to the Silver disc. Any bets? clifford_thornton Posted July 6, 2004 Report Posted July 6, 2004 quirky indie rock from a new band called White Magic and the first two Will Ackerman LPs on Windham Hill, which are great. I'd always blown him off because of the way his label went, but he's a brilliant guitarist and was paying homage to Takoma way before it was cool. Quote

Leeway Posted July 12, 2004 Report Posted July 12, 2004 Marissa Marchant's first cd, only $950.00! Can you believe it? Did you misplace a decimal point? I'm proud to report that I bought NO records or CDs this weekend. I did go to a live show. But, I repeat, no music purchases. After buying several big Mosaic sets, a couple of Mosaic Selects, a bunch of LPs, and some CDs, over the last couple of weeks, I figured it's time to take a buying hiatus. Quote
LAL Posted July 12, 2004 Report Posted July 12, 2004 Mongo Santamaria - Watermelon Man Easily one of my worst buys from the last 4-5 years. The first 12 tracks consist of what to me are mainly commercial tunes infused with Latin rhythms which become boring after a few listens. Granted Watermelon Man is a funky boogaloo worth its weight in salt but that's it. The saving grace for this CD is Mongo's percussion works and the 'bonus' 6 live titles which include his composition, Afro Blue. Quote

The saving grace for this CD is Mongo's percussion works and the 'bonus' 6 live titles which include his composition, Afro Blue. Thanks for the inspiration to give this a spin! I dig Mongo very much and find these tunes to be "commercial" in a much more appealing and musical way than today's efforts. And the band with Marty Sheller, Bobby Capers and Pat Patrick swings them nicely. My purchases last week: Ebay: Russell Gunn, Ethnomusicology Vol.3 Butch Thompson & Doc Cheatham Adonis Rose, Unity Manuel de Falla, Complete Solo Piano Works, by Jean-Francois Heisser Henry Du Mont, Motets JPC: Silvius Leopold Weiss, reconstructed Lute Concertos Hank Mobley, The Flip Lee Morgan, Sonic Boom Andrew Hill, Lift Every Voice Jason Moran, The Bandwagon CD Baby: Juli Wood, Moovin' & Groovin' Emil Richards, Luntana John Santos & Machete Ensemble, S.F. Bay Mackrosoft Parts 1 - 3: Life Imitates Clouds, Journey To Vaginus, 1st Mack To The Moon Some more coming up during the week after a serious hiatus from the online shops .... Quote
