I'd been feeling that I hadn't been keeping up with kora players, so I had a quick flick through Amazon UK a few days back and found a few. The first three turned up this morning.

Dembo Konte & Kausu Kouyate - Kairaba jabi

313B2T5FD0L._SL500_AA130_.jpg

This is a reissue of their LP "Simbomba", with another LP's worth of material, some recorded the year before and not released, one done in the nineties. Astounded to see this reissue had been around for over a decade without me noticing it. The bonus material is well up to scratch.

Toumani Diabate - The Mande variations

41-ttd751IL._SS500_.jpg

Issued last year. Very beautiful. But...

Amadu Bansang Jobarteh - Tabara

312GGBQX59L._SL500_AA130_.jpg

When I played this one after the Toumani Diabate, the difference was even more pronounced than the comparison between the two versions of "Ancient strings". Toumani is an artist; he even invented a new way of tuning the kora. Amadu (Toumani's uncle - brother of Sidiki Diabate) is a worker. His job is to show his people the greatness of their society. His music is majestic; overwhelming.

Do post some about these in the other thread, once you've heard them!

I think I have the Jelly Roll material (or some of it - on a Chrono Classics), but other than that the only one of these I have is the Bix...

I will, yes. Some wonderful insights and suggestions there. The difficult part is narrowing things down to a manageable size -- which I may not have succeeded in doing. But I'm looking forward to each of these.

I keep meaning to mention the Cab Calloway JSP box (vol 1 1930-35), but I see you've got the Missourians, which is what the band was called in the twenties. Most interested to hear your views on that.

Another of my order for kora players turned up this morning

Mory Kante - Sabou

41DQ5T06DFL._SS400_.jpg

This, unlike all his previous releases, is all acoustic. But the music is pretty similar to all his previous albums. There's more room for his kora playing, which is a good thing. I think this is going to become my favourite Mory Kante album.
