This Hill is excellent.

Thanks. I had heard it´s one of his best solo performances. My only solo Hill so far is the Montreaux Festival disc.

I bought these three items via ebay. Still a few days to receive this bunch, coming from Toulouse, France.

rather nervously put a toe into ebay and got

John Williams Trio, EmArcy 10" Australian pressing !!( supposedly in excellent condition) all for $9 ( double that with postage)

Tried bidding on few other items but was outbid with seconds to spare, with fairly ordinary sessions on vinyl going for inflated sums ( beyond their worth IMO)- not sure I'll both much with ebay

Haven't heard the Hill, but I like the Simmons/Tapscott and especially the Byard. Hope that you enjoy them when they arrive.

Modern Standards

David Hazeltine

marcello - how is it?

I kind of hate to admit it, but I really like Hazeltine's version of "The Look of Love" on Manhattan Autumn. I'll just blame it on my parents for playing too much Bacharach when I was young and impressionable! ;)

It's very good, Skid.

With David Williams on Bass and Joe Farnsworth on Drums.

The only dud, to me because of the material, is the Beatles 'Yesterday".

He does a uptempo version of "A House is Not a Home" that is very, hip and slick.

Williams and Fransworth are very tasty here and the recording is perfect.

Fransworth is sounding more and more like Billy Higgins, which is not a bad thing at all.

Hazeltine has a real gift for re-working standard songs.

Happy the Man

This was the first album of a prog rock group of the same name, recorded in '77. I bought the LP in about '81 from Wayside Music, a prog rock cutout mail order house operated by Steve Feigenbaum, who now operates Cuneiform Records.

Ok, so this 10" just arrived, musically very interesting shades of energetic Bud Powell but he's also got something of the same approach that makes Eddie Costa standout. Vinyl seems in good condition ( no marks at all) however there's plenty of surface noise and the speed of the disc sounds defective ( either that or the piano was out of tune). It remains quite listenable.

Anyone else know if the speed wobble I'm hearing is heard, on other pressings of this neat session ??
