Stan Kenton & His Orchestra - Live at Redlands University (Creative World)

That one deserves a mention on your 70s blog somehow/somewhere...a strong album by any standard and very influential in a lot of ways in its own parallel universe...

I considered including Live at Redlands University, along with a couple other Kenton recordings -- Live at BYU, Live in Europe.

But Redlands University will have to be one that we discuss afterwards.  It didn't quite make my "personal selection" cut, and I've already passed its 1970 recording date.

I am looking forward to hearing it on my stereo in high-fidelity, instead of just streaming it via YT and hearing it on crappy computer speakers or headphones.

I think all music benefits from improved sound fidelity.  But some music needs excellent sound for it to be "fully realized."  (An analogy -- 2001: A Space Odyssey isn't the same film on a television as it is on a movie screen.  The large screen is required for the film to make it's "true" impact.)

I'm thinking that Redlands University may be like that, in terms of sound. That's why I decided to order it.

We'll see.

Well, Kenton gonna Kenton, always. But on this record, that's a GOOD thing, and hell yeah, play it loud. PLAY IT VERY LOUD. :g

and seriously - play it loud. It was louder than fuck  in person, trust me, quite possible louder than anything your record player can do. But it was a clean loud, because it was all acoustic instruments, all of them. All acoustic instruments played loudly by people who knew how to do that without distorting the sound.

And that's pretty much true of all Kenton - however variable the quality of the writing is, and however variable the "jazz quotient" (whatever that means, except it's noticeable in its absence more than in its presence), that shit is always executed with the highest skill.

I might have forgotten to say this, but, yeah - play it loud. Dick Shearer has a trombone section just waiting for you to do that. Don't disappoint him.

Peter Tomlinson - Momentum, with Dick Oatts, Anthony Cox and Jimmy Cobb: Amazon must've been clearing off some shelves, because I paid $2.69 after tax.  I have never heard Tomlinson, but that band at that price was a no-brainer.

Probably not the strongest "late" Waldron date, but hearworthy nevertheless :tup ....

I've been checking out Truth Revolution Records, the label run by the Curtis Brothers, pianist Zaccai and bassist Luques.  The label has an extensive catalog of releases from vets and newcomers and a subscription service akin to Greenleaf's but with low monthly payment.

I was considering buying the Newman/Cohn/Green Mosaic Select but then found this.  It has the two Newman albums from the Mosaic and two others.  I have only one Newman album, so I am looking forward to hearing this.

Thankful that records last longer than the people who make them (and the people who buy them and, for that matter, sell them), as well as for the gosdarn internet, which might do it's part to keep those records alive in the market place, all of which has been said in light of last night's very simple Dusty Groove order:

Agreed. Good choice indeed.

A bundle of Mosaics..

CD versions of the Complete Count Basie Studio Roulette and Maynard Fergusson Roulette boxes. I have LPs but really wanted these in CD format for ease of endless spinning and future streaming. Also Dinah Washington Roulette (which has eluded me).

You beat me to the Dinah Washington but I was happy with my haul. The prices on the Basie and Ferguson were great, though. I certainly paid a lot more!

What a great list. Which did you get?

I’m almost too embarrassed to give the full list but I got the O’Day, Eldridge, Rich, Mulligan, Cherry, Shearing, Ventura/Phillips, Teagarden and Master Piano sets.

Am on a major Verve kick at the minute so the timing was good from that perspective. Plus lots of time to listen!

Fantastic haul. Plus some very good prices - that Mulligan especially. You are in for some great listening there. The O’Day I don’t spin enough and will dig out (bought from Scott direct at one of his record show appearances).

That was a very good run of Verve boxes that they did. Can’t think of one dud amongst them. Hope that the Stuff Smith on the list went to a good home !

That's one I'd like to hear.

I had been on the fence about this forever, but finally went for a used copy:

I grew up in Evanston, IL (home of Bee Hive), so it's nostalgia in a sense. I never knew of the Neumann family, though.

I've wanted this CD for a while, and yesterday I found it for a reasonable price on eBay. ... Patterson is excellent, and Booker Ervin's presence seals the deal.

Both of the two Marion Brown / Mal Waldron collaborations are fantastic.

... Nearly on par with Waldron's many outings with Steve Lacy.

Different, of course. But that good!

I've been meaning to check out Popkin, Tabnik and Crothers for a long time, so I ordered these 2 downloads for $4.99 apiece from New Artists Records:

The Tabnik is even a double album.  If I decide to upgrade to hard copies at some point, the price was right.
