Some good ones too - the 'Oliver Nelson and Friends' (Hank Jones on funky harpsichord !), the Chico Hamilton 'El Chico', the Archie Shepp 'For Losers' and the McCoy Tyner 'Inception/Reaching Forth'. Sound quality seems very good - should have bought even more of them ! I'm particularly fond of Inception/Reaching Forth. The one I got from this series (Sonny Rollins) sounds good. It was mastered at Eastside Mastering Studios, Berlin. This series was a European initiative? A lot of them are currently €15 for three CDs at amazon.de (about two thirds of the series). Much better than the US Impulse! Originals from a few years earlier (mostly Kevin Reeves). Those were garbage. The sound on these is better than the GRPs (not difficult) and also the digipacksI think. Certainly good enough for my everyday purposes and if I want to treat myself to a 'hi fi' listen then I'll pop a vinyl copy on if I have one (stand by for 'incoming'..). No point in splurging money on imported Japanese CDs.. The text in the booklet confirms that these originate in Germany - Darmstadt Jazz Institut seem to have been involved in the series as does (intriguingly) Dusty Groove ! The McCoy is a great release - two classic LPs. and where else can you hear Ollie Nelson and Hank Jones do a nice cheesy version of 'Winchester Cathedral'? Edited June 10, 2015 by sidewinder Quote

Sure, if I want to hear Sonny Rollins On Impulse! in 'hi fi' then I pop in the hybrid SACD (APO, Kevin Gray) (just €21 incl. shipping). I already had a lot of them and bought all the ones I didn't have -- as much for the often excellent booklets as for the music, most of which I have elsewhere. Particularly happy to get the Red Norvo box with superb notes by the late DonDeMichael. The late Dick Sudhalter's notes for the Bunny Berigan set look to be top notch, too, and Berigan hasn't been written about much in such detail. Tatum set, interestingly, has notes by A.B. Spellman. Also got the Waller, Bessie Smith, Ellington, Johnny Hodges, Bechet, Teddy Wilson, Lester Young, and Pee Wee Russell. Quote

Reminded me of the good times at Fopp in Cambridge. There was a pairing on Gene Ammons's The Soulful Moods with Nice an' Cool. But the real surprise was George Russell's Stratusphunk paired with The Stratus Seekers for $5! Curiously, this is just as cheap at Amazon.ca (http://www.amazon.ca/Jazzplus-Stratusphunk-The-Stratus-Seekers/dp/B0090UH6TO), though quite pricey on Amazon.com.This is in the Jazzplus reissue series from Universal. Probably limited to the EU and Canada. The booklet contains the full art of both albums (though obviously shrunk) and the back cover of each LP is also reproduced. A nice touch. It reminds me a bit of the Mosaic Selects, though I don't think they ever provided a reproduction of the LP back.I'm trying not to add much more to my collection, but I might pick up one or two more of these.
