Parliament has been mentioned, so has Walter (Junie) Morrison. Morrison collaborated on "One Nation Under a Groove". I listened to this non-stop when I was 18, and still play it once a while today. 

Among the later Funkadelic albums, another classic which will undoubtedly get you up on your feet!
