porcy62 Posted November 30, 2023 Report Posted November 30, 2023 https://www.nytimes.com/2023/11/30/arts/music/shane-macgowan-dead.html I always had a sweet spot for the guy and his music. Not a common life for sure and some great music from him. RIP I'll play Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash for him, he deserve it. Quote
adh1907 Posted December 1, 2023 Report Posted December 1, 2023 He was a poet. The Pogues played a miner’s benefit at Hampstead Old Town Hall in 1985, on the same day they recorded a session on the Tube (a well regarded live TV programme on Channel 4, early Friday evening). I bumped into Shane in the bogs at the gig and mentioned I had seen the programme that evening, expressed surprise that they had made the gig. He said (swaying gently) that the Tube had paid for a flight from Newcastle to London and they had enjoyed free drink all the way down. It was a great gig. This is their performance on that day Quote
EKE BBB Posted December 1, 2023 Report Posted December 1, 2023 R.I.P. A man of excesses, but a great lyricist and frontman. The first three Pogues discs were always on heavy rotation at my place back in the second half of the 80s. I think I still have vinyl copies stored somewhere at my parents'. Quote
soulpope Posted December 1, 2023 Report Posted December 1, 2023 So drunk to hell I left the place Sometimes crawling sometimes walking A hungry sound came across the breeze So I gave the walls a talking And I heard the sounds of long ago From the old canal And the birds were whistling in the trees Where the wind was gently laughing .... rostasi Posted December 5, 2023 Report Posted December 5, 2023 (edited) "A Drink With Shane MacGowan" is a hilarious book that my wife and I both enjoyed. Both of us are big fans of The Pogues and've seen the band (have the t-shirts, etc.), so we were bummed about hearing this. Remember reading how folks pitched in to get him a new set of teeth. 😀 He was in pretty bad shape these past few years, but he left us with the memory of a unique voice and a helluva good band! Also, it's "MacGowan." Edited December 5, 2023 by rostasi Quote
mjazzg Posted December 9, 2023 Report Posted December 9, 2023 Very fitting. If that was the funeral heaven alone knows what the wake was like... Quote
romualdo Posted December 10, 2023 Report Posted December 10, 2023 RIP Shane loved this band - saw them twice here in Brisbane during the 80s I'd been a fan of the Irish folk/folk rock bands mainly from the 70s ie Planxty, Clannad, The Bothy Band etc so this was the next logical step The Pogues were a breath of fresh air with their "punk" ethos & Shane's lyrical artistry Sold their LPs years ago but have kept all of their 7" singles Quote
