I would VHS all the Playhouse shows on a separate tape. My son would ask for them specifically. He was 3.

The first season in particular was sheer genius.

Also I that first season, Playhouse was followed by the Ralph Bakshi Mighty Mouse, which was its own kind of brilliance.

RIP, dammit.

The transition from The Pee Wee Herman Show to Pee Wee's playhouse was amazing, how the kept all of the out there stuff while also making it a kid-friendly show. Lines were skirted, but never crossed.

Groundbreaking stuff!

Pee Wee was very popular in Japan in the early 1990s (appeared in some TV CMs). His recent work as a character actor (Mr. Vargas in The Blacklist) was also impressive.  RIP.

Don't overlook Big Top Pee Wee. It's nowhere the epic that Big Adventure is, but it does create it's own zone and works within it quite nicely.

We just watched the luau episode of Pee Wee's Playhouse, and it was scored by Todd Rundgren!

What on earth is that woman wearing?  She looks like the female Ed Grimley!

Speaking of Les baxter, I was just reading Brian Wilson's 'odd' autobiography, where he said that he loved listening to Les Baxter, because he did all these big productions that sounded sort of like Phi Spector productions"(!)   Everything to Brian was either Phil Spector or The Four Freshman.
