Rabshakeh
Sad news: Brazilian keyboard great João Donato gas passed away aged 88. I am particularly fond of his later records, particularly Donato Elétrico, which I will be playing tonight.
Teasing the Korean
RIP. A Bad Donato on Blue Thumb is his masterpiece. Love his tune "Amazonas." @Rabshakeh This should be moved to the artists forum before it sinks without a trace.

mikeweil
R.I.P. He was responsible for the Cuban influence in Brazilian music through his membership in Mongo Santamaria's band - many montunos in his pieces. This is one of my favourites: Edited July 17, 2023 by mikeweil
Teasing the Korean
As I mentioned earlier, his dope 1969 Blue Thumb LP A Bad Donato is amazing. Here is the whole album.

sgcim
RIP to another Brazilian great. Always wrote simple melodies that cooked.
GA Russell
RIP. He was there at the beginning. Donato was a favorite of mine, perhaps in part due to the fact that his songs were not beaten to death like Jobim's were. Here's Sergio Mendes. mikeweil
Donato's piano artistry was sublime. Let this album sink in:
Balladeer
Joao Donato was the torch bearer of sophisticated Brazilian Samba groove. Ravishing group playing on classics like Amazonas, Lugar Comum, Brisa do Mar, Sambolero, and A Ra. His gorgeous recordings are countless. Donato has been one of the last giants of MPB. One of my all-time favourites remains his piano recital "O Piano de Joao Donato" from 2007. Obrigado pela música, Joao!
Justin V
This is a case of my discovering someone due to the news of their passing. I ended up listening to a duo album he did with Paulo Moura that is really nice; his comping sounds so hip to me. I'll be checking out more of his music. RIP.
