The great trumpet player Oscar Brashear has passed away. Maybe best known to jazz folks for his excellent contributions to small ensemble albums by Bobby Hutcherson, Harold Land, Joe Henderson, and others, but he was also a prolific session musician who played on hundreds of recordings, many of which I'm sure you know. A cursory skim through his Wikipedia page should give you an idea of the breadth of his contributions. RIP, and thanks for the music.

R.I.P.

I think he had the most distinctive sound of all trumpet players. I always recognized him after one or two notes. I remember an interview where he was asked about electric trumpets, and he answered he had worked on this sound for so long that he didn't want to plug in and sound like something else.

He plays on half of this album with his great sound:

Not his leader session, but I think this is a lesser-known masterpiece by Mr. Oscar Brashear.  RIP.

I used to see that date in the CD bins and never did pick it up. The CD cover looks like this:

Sorry to hear this, RIP. There was a time in the 70s and 80s that he seemed to be everywhere on record for those sessions recorded in LA. I have the feeling that I saw him once but not entirely sure where - possibly with Gerald Wilson? Yes, very distinctive trumpet sound.
