Pim Posted June 6, 2023 Report Posted June 6, 2023 Didn’t see any topic yet dedicated to this excellent Japanese drummer. I have Eastern Plants, Smile and the 2 duo albums with Mal Waldron and I love all of them. BBE is now reissuing ‘Live at Lovely’ and must say samples sound excellent. Any thoughts on the guy? Quote
mjazzg Posted June 6, 2023 Report Posted June 6, 2023 I have to admit that the BBE reissues didn't grab my attention. His Enja with Schoof and Sakata is a favourite as is this one https://www.discogs.com/master/1054108-Moriyama-Takeo-Percussion-Ensemble-Full-Load Quote
T.D. Posted June 6, 2023 Report Posted June 6, 2023 I don't have any recordings with him as leader, thanks for the ideas. Only know his work through some of the early Yosuke Yamashita Trio releases, which are of course very good. Quote
Pim Posted June 6, 2023 Author Report Posted June 6, 2023 this one has been reissued recently. I love this track particularly Quote

mhatta Posted June 6, 2023 Report Posted June 6, 2023 (edited) Moriyama is still alive and well, playing drums with great energy. I think Moriyama (and Yosuke Yamashita)'s masterpiece in free jazz is Dancing Kojiki, but it may not be well known outside Japan. Starting with a fierce agitation (they recorded in the midst of the student movement demonstrations at Waseda University), an equally fierce performance follows. But my personal favorite is Hush-A-Bye. Edited June 6, 2023 by mhatta Quote
mjazzg Posted June 7, 2023 Report Posted June 7, 2023 Which of the duos with Mal do you suggest I try @Pim Quote
Pim Posted June 7, 2023 Author Report Posted June 7, 2023 They’ve got 2 which are both excellent. My favorite is : https://snake-out.blogspot.com/2021/04/1995-takeo-moriyamamal-waldron-bit-12.html?m=1 A long improvisational suite. It was very hard to obtain and was priced to high but more acceptable prices are now on Discogs: https://www.discogs.com/sell/release/12652610?ev=rb The other one is good as well but not on the same level imo. It’s also pretty hard to find and was also reissued in the Maturity series: https://snake-out.blogspot.com/2021/04/1995-maturity-3-dual.html?m=1 https://www.discogs.com/master/1571530-Mal-Waldron-Takeo-Moriyama-Dual It’s hard to find any samples or streaming. If I’d still be able to rip a cd I’d send you one to try out…. Quote
mjazzg Posted June 7, 2023 Report Posted June 7, 2023 (edited) Thanks Pim Ripping CDs, those were the days! Edited June 7, 2023 by mjazzg Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 7, 2023 Report Posted June 7, 2023 I'll pick up this new BBE session -- have originals of his earlier leader albums. My Dear is a favorite in particular, but they're all strong and quite varied in subtle ways. Am intrigued by the dates with Mal and have 'em in my Discogs wants, but have yet to hear them... of course his work with Yamashita is incredible. Quote
T.D. Posted June 7, 2023 Report Posted June 7, 2023 I just included this in a DG order (since they had it and I liked samples): Quote

Steve Reynolds Posted June 7, 2023 Report Posted June 7, 2023 Yotagarasu with Moriyama Satoh & Peter Brotzmann on Not Two records circa 2012 is one of the greatest Brotzmann sessions ever! Quote
