Dmitry Posted May 10, 2023 Report Posted May 10, 2023 Let's add to the list. The two that come to mind immediately: Miles Davis - painting (I think he started in later years of his life). Tony Bennett - painting (not a fan of his pictures, but the man does who he wants) Roscoe Mitchell also paints. https://www.chicagotribune.com/entertainment/music/ct-ent-jazz-icon-roscoe-mitchell-painter-20230201-blplkdtp7nedzp2xlbqzvk6uia-story.html https://chicagoreader.com/arts-culture/roscoe-mitchells-kaleidoscopic-artwork/ Quote
John Tapscott Posted May 10, 2023 Report Posted May 10, 2023 I believe Pee Wee Russell was a painter. Quote
felser Posted May 10, 2023 Report Posted May 10, 2023 The great flautist Lloyd McNeill also studied with Pablo Picasso and won several photography awards. From his obituary: "McNeill published two volumes of poetry, including “Blackline: A Collection of Poems, Drawings, and Photographs,” and “After the Rain: A Collection of New Poems.” In 2001, he was chosen by the USPS to design a postage stamp for the celebration of Kwanzaa in 2009.". clifford_thornton Posted May 10, 2023 Report Posted May 10, 2023 (edited) Roscoe, yep! That book is tremendous. Also, Bill Dixon Richard "Dickie" Landry (an accomplished painter and photographer as well as saxophonist) Michael Snow (painter, sculptor, filmmaker, pianist, trumpeter) Marzette Watts (studied painting at the Sorbonne) Rob Mazurek Peter Brötzmann Peter Kowald Sven-Åke Johansson A.R. Penck (known more as a painter but also recorded prolifically as a drummer, keyboardist, and bassist) Alfred 23 Harth Rodrigo Amado (great photographer in addition to being a heck of tenor player). Vandermark is also an excellent photographer. Ornette Edited May 10, 2023 by clifford_thornton Quote
jlhoots Posted May 10, 2023 Report Posted May 10, 2023 Probably doesn't count - but Joni Mitchell. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted May 10, 2023 Report Posted May 10, 2023 Muhal Richard Abrams Milford Graves (kinetic sculpture) also going the other way, referencing Penck above, there was the Artist's Jazz Band in Toronto (of which Snow was a member) and the Park Place Gallery jazz band (unrecorded 60s free jazz ensemble comprised of sculptors and painters associated with the gallery). yes to Bennink, thanks for the reminder. Also, Misha Mengelberg was loosely associated with Fluxus in its Amsterdam satellite. I don't know how much visual work he did (the ICP 002 maze was his, IIRC) but he was part of that scene in the mid-60s. Keith Rowe (not sure if you want to call him a jazz musician per se) Quote
clifford_thornton Posted May 10, 2023 Report Posted May 10, 2023 Peter Ind I seem to recall reading somewhere that Bob Thompson (painter) also played drums a bit. He was close with Steve Lacy, Archie Shepp, Ornette, Don Cherry, and others. Quote

I have one of his prints actually. Mellé is cool. I don't know the size of his works, and wonder if any/how many were done outside the context of album design. Quote

mikeweil Posted May 10, 2023 Report Posted May 10, 2023 German jazz drummer Ralf Hübner was a painter. Guitarist Volker Kriegel, also cartoons and children's books, IIRC. What about Daniel Humair and Hans Koller? Quote

I think he was also a President of the American antique microscope collectors society, or something equally esoteric. This begs for an addendum: let's see the album covers featuring paintings, drawings, or sculpture (let's throw in the architecture also. After all it is one of the Great Arts) by jazz musicians. sidewinder Posted May 10, 2023 Report Posted May 10, 2023 Ian Dury also trained in fine art (and did the cover art on my A B Spellman Book). Quote
