I prefer a lot of George Jackson's demos to the released versions.  There are various opinions about George Jackson's singing voice.  I am a huge fan.

We are on the same page .... it is well documented, that the quality of his demos - similarly to Dan Penn  - was rather an obstacle, as quite some established artists didn't have the guts to try out his songs .... btw the Fame demos are also testament to the fabulous studio musicians ....

Great Cover Versions part 1 .... :

Harvey Scales "Universal Love" (Casablanca) 1978 ....the previous communication with "John L" made me think about an loose ongoing series of outstanding cover versions which stand above the original .... starting with a close call, as the original release by Z.Z. Hill is excellent as well ....

Great Cover Versions Part 2 .... :

Phoenix Express "You Make My Life A Sunny Day" (Kent unreleased) 1971/2002 .... soulful vocals (actually by duo Eddie & Ernie) injecting more emotions compared to the excellent version of Jacqueline Jones ....

Great Cover Versions Part 3 .... :

Jackie Moore "Set Me Free" (Atlantic unreleased) 1974/2015 .... seeing the light of day even later than the also unreleased take from  Esther Phillips .... prove that Atlantic - beneath Aretha Franklin - had no clue how to handle great female soul voices ....

Great Cover Versions Part 4 .... :

Tavares "My Love Calls" (Capitol) 1979 .... speaking of gifted Southern Soul singers/songwriters Sam Dees comes up trumps with this beautifuly crafted ballad .... the Tavares offer perfect execution and better the composer's demo from 1977 ....

Great Cover Versions Part  5 .... :

Dee Dee Warwick "She Didn’t Know (She Kept On Talking)" (ATCO) 1970 .... on equal footing with Sandra Phillips .... btw pinpoint Swamp Dogg ballad ....

Great Cover Versions Part 6 .... :

Original

The O'Jays "Sunshine" (P.I.R) 1972

Cover

The Impressions "Sunshine" (Curtom) 1976

Astonishing, how then Impressions leadsinger Ralph Johnson holds his own vs the famous Eddie Levert ....

Love Committee „Give Her Love“ (Gold Mind Records)  1978 …. part of the stand-out tracks on this excellent one-off LP released via the Norman Harris founded Gold Mind Records label and documenting an epic vocal performance from Ron Tyson .... btw feat Bobby Eli, who left us for good in 2023 ....

Great Cover Versions Part 8 .... :

Esther Phillips „Brand New Day/Crazy Love“ (Atlantic)         1970 …. Esther Phillips with the Dixie Flyers covers Van Morrison …. too close to call ....

Irma Thomas “All I Wanna Do Is Save You” (Rhino Customs Music) 2014 …. previously unreleased Deep Soul gem recorded in 1971 @ Malaco Studios and supervised by mastermind Wardell Quezergue .... wow ....

Great Cover Versions Part 10 .... :

The Maytones "Throw Down Your Arms" (Third World) 1980 .... sublime Burning Spear cover .... and while Vernon Buckley sings Sam Cooke is lurking around the corner .... btw Sly & Robbie in attendance ....

Great Cover Versions Part 11 .... :

O.V. Wright  "Your Good Thing (Is About To End)" (Hi Records) 1979 .... most stories remain incomplete until O.V. Wright steps up to the fore ....

One of my favorites.  It was a hard one to find for many years.  I only had it on cassette tape.

Really appreciate your feedback and thoughts .... I was an avid 45's collector and this track (hidden as B-Side) was rather hard to find ....
