randissimo Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 I just got an e-mail from my dad that Elvin Jones has passed away... Quote
neveronfriday Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 I just got an e-mail from my dad that Elvin Jones has passed away... Man, what a way to start the day. Very sad. I'll grab some Elvin tunes and will trundle off to work. Elvin was cool. Quote
king ubu Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 Very sad news I'll spin that broadcast again - he was such a nice man, it seems! I'll have to transcribe what exactly he says before they play "It Don't Mean A Thing" on that broadcast of mine. Very sad! ubu Quote
LAL Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 This is indeed sad news. Will spin many of his records as tribute to this great musician. Quote
sal Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 (edited) Heaven is blessed with his presence. May he rest in peace. Edited May 7, 2004 by sal Quote
Peter Johnson Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 What a way to start the day. Oh, this really really sucks, really hurts...it seems like everyone truly connected with the great man, either in music, in spirit, in mind... Sad to see you leave this world, Elvin. Be well on your next journey. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 FYI, this might be another Internet rumor just like Joe Henderson. Joe was reported dead on the 'net almost 2 years before the actual event. It was pretty bad then, and it would be pretty bad now if we let it. The rec.music.bluenote newsgroup started talking about this rumor yesterday and here it is a day later and no official word? Not looking good. I say let's wait for the official confirmation before starting an "RIP Elvin Jones" thread. Later, Kevin Quote
7/4 Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 I can't find a trace of this rumor on Google news. Quote
Dan Gould Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 I was looking for an NYT obit but I figured they were behind the times, as it were. But coming from Randy's dad, I assumed this was not as likely to be an internet rumor. Either way, when I get home I'm listening to my recently received 70th birthday party Jazz Machine gig at the Blue Note. I want to celebrate Elvin, whether he's with us or not. Quote
makpjazz57 Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 Someone from one of the AOL jazz chat rooms also announced Elvin's passing, but with no information. I'm going to hope the info is incorrect. I sure do remember what happened wtih Joe Henderson! Marla Quote
Gary Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 IEither way, when I get home I'm listening to my recently received 70th birthday party Jazz Machine gig at the Blue Note. I want to celebrate Elvin, whether he's with us or not. Agreed - I'm going to the disc from the Coltane Legacy box which highlights the importance of Elvin Jones input. Quote
brownie Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 Please restrain from digging a grave for Elvin. New of his death is hopefully a bit premature! I can hear him playing behind (and even right in front of) John Coltrane. But it's only on 'I Want to Talk About You' from the Birdland album. Hell, Elvin Jones is very much alive to me!! Quote
clifford_thornton Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 I would think that by this point there would be mention of his passing on his website, but there isn't. I sure hope this is a rumor and just that at present, because a world without Elvin would be kind of a drag. He's just one of those guys you feel that you can count on... not to mention an architect of the d-r-u-m. Quote
Dan Gould Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 And nothing on Jazztimes.com either. I think we've been taken in ... and they should string up whoever started this story. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 He has shows coming up at the Blue Note. I called and they are still on. Read this. Or call Like I did Quote
king ubu Posted May 7, 2004 Report Posted May 7, 2004 Well, so let's hope he is and will be among us for some more time! ubu Quote
