LWayne Posted April 16, 2023 Report Posted April 16, 2023 (edited) London Jazz News, among others, announced the legend passed today, April 16th, at his home. Truly stunned. RIP Legend. LWayne Edited April 16, 2023 by LWayne Quote
felser Posted April 16, 2023 Report Posted April 16, 2023 RIP, great legacy. He was 92, recorded for like 70 years. Quote
JSngry Posted April 16, 2023 Report Posted April 16, 2023 I am stunned as well. He was indeed quite old, but seemed to retain vigor and vitality up until what I saw of the end. Quote
mjzee Posted April 16, 2023 Report Posted April 16, 2023 R.I.P. He carried much respect within the jazz world. Quote
HutchFan Posted April 16, 2023 Report Posted April 16, 2023 That's sad news. Another legendary figure gone. R.I.P. Quote
mikeweil Posted April 16, 2023 Report Posted April 16, 2023 (edited) R.I.P. That's shocking news, even considering his age. I adore his trios with Ray Crawford, and the later ones with Crosby and Fournier. Edited April 16, 2023 by mikeweil Quote
Peter Friedman Posted April 16, 2023 Report Posted April 16, 2023 R.I.P. Very sad to hear of his passing. Quote
Ken Dryden Posted April 16, 2023 Report Posted April 16, 2023 Another great loss to the world of jazz. Quote
tranemonk Posted April 16, 2023 Report Posted April 16, 2023 Wow... I don't know what to say... I'm grateful for the musical legacy he left us. Quote

sidewinder Posted April 17, 2023 Report Posted April 17, 2023 RIP - A long life and a great legacy for this legendary figure. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 17, 2023 Report Posted April 17, 2023 Dang, that's quite a major loss. RIP. Quote
romualdo Posted April 17, 2023 Report Posted April 17, 2023 RIP Ahmad - another legend gone Coincidentally I've been playing the recently released 4CDs "Live At The Penthouse" on rotation since receiving them two weeks ago - superb music Highly recommended IMHO Quote
sidewinder Posted April 17, 2023 Report Posted April 17, 2023 (edited) I actually saw him in a record shop once, scanning the jazz CD racks. At least I’m fairly sure it was him, he was doing a gig in town (LA) at the time. Certainly one of the most impressive live performers I’ve ever seen. A master at timing and cranking up tension and release in his shows. 5 hours ago, clifford_thornton said: Dang, that's quite a major loss. RIP. It was even in the BBC news bulletin over here. Even Wayne Shorter didn’t get that. Edited April 17, 2023 by sidewinder Quote
Clunky Posted April 17, 2023 Report Posted April 17, 2023 Sad news. I caught him live once in Edinburgh , mid 90s I think. Yoron Israel his drummer then. Great set. Major figure indeed. Quote
sidewinder Posted April 17, 2023 Report Posted April 17, 2023 (edited) Caught him a few times, including a Canada festival appearance. The occasion that stands out though was once in NYC in a packed and enthusiastic house. I think it was the Jazz Standard, caught both sets. James Cammack was on bass, don’t think it was Israel on drums that time. He would have been in his late 60s/early 70s and playing like a much younger man. Edited April 17, 2023 by sidewinder Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted April 17, 2023 Report Posted April 17, 2023 RIP Ahmad. Thank you for the music. Quote
hopkins Posted April 17, 2023 Report Posted April 17, 2023 (edited) Here is a very nice picture of a young Ahmad Jamal (taken in the early fifties?), included in the Jazz Piano Moods Mosaic booklet: RIP. Edited April 17, 2023 by hopkins Quote
