Gheorghe Posted April 11, 2023 Report Posted April 11, 2023 I don´t know who is Al Jaffé , but I had heard about a pianist whose name is Nat Jaffé. One of my grandfathas´name was "Jaffé" and he had emigrated to NY in the early 1920, but was not a musician, he had to do with art printing...... I have heard that this is quite a common name in the States. Quote
rostasi Posted April 11, 2023 Author Report Posted April 11, 2023 Well, the name Jaffee might be a Hebrew derivation of the name you mentioned, but anyway, Al Jaffee’s work had a considerable influence of silliness on a generation of young people - at least in America. Quote

Dan Gould Posted April 11, 2023 Report Posted April 11, 2023 I saw this thread and did not recognize the name but then I saw the NYT obituary and realized how he spent most of his life. Very talented and very funny, RIP. Quote
mjzee Posted April 11, 2023 Report Posted April 11, 2023 The MAD magazine of the '50's and '60's had a huge influence on many people, including me. The sensibility and also the graphic talent. RIP. Quote
T.D. Posted April 11, 2023 Report Posted April 11, 2023 RIP. I was a big MAD reader back in the '60s. Quote
sgcim Posted April 13, 2023 Report Posted April 13, 2023 RIP. I don't know if it was Jaffe, but a friend of mine was telling me a story about a musician friend of his who read MAD a lot back in the 70s. One time they were talking together and his friend all of a sudden reached the conclusion that one of their writers wasn't funny anymore, and he had to tell him how to improve his writing in MAD- IN PERSON!!!!! He got on the subway and went right into their office, and asked to see the writer. They wouldn't let him in, and he started freaking out, so they had to call the cops, and they had to take him away to Bellvue! That was just the start of a long psychotic break, and he wound up starving himself to death because he refused to eat. My sister always liked to annoy me by telling me I looked like Alfred E. Newman. What, me worry? Quote
Stompin at the Savoy Posted April 13, 2023 Report Posted April 13, 2023 I liked him and was especially fond of Don Martin. Quote
