And throw in the Prestige albums. Those were so chopped up, it would be nice to have them in session order. Quote

Ken Dryden Posted October 15 Report Posted October 15 It would be nice to see all of Jaki Byard's Prestige output as a leader or solo pianist in one package. I have a few unissued tracks from the Lennie's sessions that were never issued, though some of them are multiple rehearsal takes of "King David," a tune evidently not performed that night. I understand that Mosaic may think since the material has been reissued on CD (minus "Hello, Young Lovers," which was omitted from that messed up compilation of Solo Piano and Jaki Byard With Strings), that Byard fans have been able to acquire most of the music, though I think all of his Prestige albums are out of print. I like the idea Ken but as you mention, being a Byard fan I already have 10 of his OJC/Prestige/New Jazz CDs Quote

gmonahan Posted October 20 Report Posted October 20 I don't think Mosaic has much access to that catalog. If they did, I'd want that massive Gene Ammons set first! Quote

tranemonk Posted November 14 Report Posted November 14 I'm still waiting for my 5cd Live Unreleased Betty Carter set... I can't believe people forgot how important she was. For me, there are five female jazz singers I have to listen to... Billie, Anita O'Day, Shirley Horn, Abbey Lincoln and Betty Carter. I've got the Anita set. I assume all the Billie material has been released. Abbey Lincoln had a small box set years ago on another label. That just leaves Shirley and Betty. Given how many instrumentalists praise her, I don't know why there isn't a greater recognition of her. If Mosaic can find some Lennie Tristano stuff, why not Betty? Quote
jazzbo Posted November 14 Report Posted November 14 There may be many reasons why there is no Mosaic set for Betty. And it's possible one day we'll see one, who knows? She's a hero of mine, she was so so so brave to blaze her own trail and she was a very accomplished talent scout and bandleader. I know I have personally suggested a box set of hers to Mosaic. Maybe one day. Quote
JSngry Posted November 14 Report Posted November 14 I'm glad that they released the Bill Barron set along with all the pre-bop stuff. Quote

Maybe one day. The disappointing thing is that the music's got to be out there. Wynton's JALC label came out with one of her unreleased live concerts three or four years ago. It was really good. I'm glad I'm not the only one wanting this. Quote
jazzbo Posted November 14 Report Posted November 14 (edited) That was really good. But. . . I don't necessarily assume the music is "out there." Or perhaps more clearly that they are "available." There I am sure are many things of all types I would like to hear that just aren't able to be licensed and released fro many reasons. There is so much of so many artists that are available to listen to that I will spend the rest of my life looking for and listening to that. . . well it would be great for a box set of Carter material but if it doesn't appear I'll be fine. I love that woman's work. I'll listen to what I do have, which I think is all the official, over and over. Edited November 14 by jazzbo Quote
