jazzbo Posted March 8, 2023 Report Posted March 8, 2023 (edited) You know. . . you can't go wrong except sonically with any of them. But the one that sounds the very best and may be the best one to buy is the Vogue (plus) material reissued on Piano Solo : The Centennial Edition - Paris 1954. Great music, great sound--and an official release. Edited March 8, 2023 by jazzbo Quote
Dub Modal Posted March 8, 2023 Report Posted March 8, 2023 Very interesting list. I don't have any of these either so am interested in any insight. Quote
jazzbo Posted March 8, 2023 Report Posted March 8, 2023 (edited) Live In New York Vol. 1 I am pretty sure I have as one of the Monk Family cds, and it's a great set performance. . .sound is okay. Thelonious TMF9323 is another Monk Family release and the sound and picture are very good. Live in Amsterdam, May 1961 purports to be a legal release and has excellent sound, great performance. colinmce Posted March 8, 2023 Report Posted March 8, 2023 Another vote for the 1954 set, as prime as can be. Quote
jazzbo Posted March 8, 2023 Report Posted March 8, 2023 The two Monterey Jazz Festival discs (Monk, Giants of Jazz) are official releases and in excellent sound. Quote
HutchFan Posted March 8, 2023 Report Posted March 8, 2023 I have nothing to contribute, but I've got to say that this thread is exactly why I LOVE this place. To say that there's a lot of expertise-that-extends-to-the-level-of-obsessive-and-delightful-nerdiness on this forum would be an understatement. You are my people! Quote
John L Posted March 8, 2023 Report Posted March 8, 2023 (edited) I would highly suggest getting the Monk in Philadelphia compilation. There are quite a number of great rare and unusual tracks on that one from various periods in Monk's career. I don't see Stockholm 1961 on your list. Maybe you already have it. That is a favorite of mine, released in good sound by Dragon. I really like the Palais Des Beaux-Arts & Copenhagen (M.O.N.K.) recordings from the 1963 Europe tour. They are in great (professional) sound and Monk is in very good form (IMO). If you only get one of them, I would recommend Palais Des Beaux-Arts. I am less thrilled by the Paris concert on this tour. The Village Gate 1963 is in somewhat muffled sound. But I have always really liked what Monk plays on this date. Paris Olympia 1965 is also not to be missed. But beware of the so-called "volume 4" which is actually tracks from some of the Riverside Europe 1961 records. I really like a lot of music that Monk played on the 1966 Europe tour. His approach to many of the songs was notably different to the previous tours. I have a difficult time recalling which of the many concerts from that tour are the best. But I would suggest getting a representative sample. John Edited March 8, 2023 by John L Quote
cliffpeterson Posted March 9, 2023 Report Posted March 9, 2023 you would find this out quickly enough: The "1963 In Japan : Thelonious Monk Quartet - TBS, TV Broadcast, Tokyo, Japan, May 23, 1963 - Eastwind (E)EWCD702 [CD]" is available as a cd on that Fourstar budget label The Great Canadian Concert Of The Thelonious Monk Quartet - Live "Place des Arts, Grande Salle", Montreal, Canada, August 21, 1965 - CBC (Can)RM141 is readily available on -Hi- Hat, that highly "legitimate" label, and is known as something like "the Montreal Concert". The American Jazz Classics cd "Thelonious Monk Plays Duke Ellington" includes not only the Berlin concert but also the Riverside album of the same name and a tune or two with the Duke Ellington orchestra without Monk (?) from a date that I cannot remember. medjuck Posted March 9, 2023 Report Posted March 9, 2023 (edited) Wolfgang's Vault has the 1975 Newport Avery Fischer Hall performance. I think it is the last recorded Monk. (He did appear the next year but I've never seen a recording of it.). Despite Monk's condition at the time, I think this is a pretty good concert. Certainly of historical interest. https://www.wolfgangs.com/music/thelonious-monk-quartet/audio/20020457-51182.html?tid=4855879 Edited March 9, 2023 by medjuck Quote

Gheorghe Posted March 15, 2023 Report Posted March 15, 2023 So much Monk ! I never was a completist, but on Monk live albums I sure have the Five Spot on River Side, and something, a double album on CBS, and there is a bootleg maybe from Italy earlier than the CBS, which has the best versions of "Off Minor" and "Evidence" I ever heard. Also a fine version of "Jacky-ing". The 1969 Monk in Paris I have on DVD, they have quite unknown bassist and drummer, but Philly Joe Jones sits in. And there is some bonus of Monk solo playing Ellington. I never saw the Swiss Concorde album and might have to look for it on discogs.... I further have a double CD "Last Monk" or something like that, with a fine quartet with Monk´s son and with Dave Holland on bass. Quote

I think it starts unusally with a slower tune, I think "Ruby My Dear". It´s not a very long concert since they had to leave to play in town. But it´s nice, yeah. Quote
