Hardbopjazz Posted March 31, 2004 Report Posted March 31, 2004 Which standards do you identify with a particular artist? Whenever I hear All the things you are or play it in my head, I right away think of Bird. Autumn Leaves I think and hear of Cannonball and Miles. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted March 31, 2004 Author Report Posted March 31, 2004 "The Girl from Ipamena" always reminds me of the Stan Getz's version. Quote
Dan Gould Posted March 31, 2004 Report Posted March 31, 2004 Well, isn't "Body and Soul" always associated with Coleman Hawkins? Quote
EKE BBB Posted March 31, 2004 Report Posted March 31, 2004 Well, isn't "Body and Soul" always associated with Coleman Hawkins? Yeah! But Pres also did a memorable version in 1942 (with Nat Cole, if I remember correctly) Quote
brownie Posted March 31, 2004 Report Posted March 31, 2004 I know that 'I'm Getting Sentimental Over You' belongs to Tommy Dorsey but for me, the song and Thelonious Monk go together Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted March 31, 2004 Author Report Posted March 31, 2004 (edited) Pokka dots and Moonbeams always remind me of Bud Powell’s version. Edited March 31, 2004 by Hardbopjazz Quote
EKE BBB Posted March 31, 2004 Report Posted March 31, 2004 There are many outstanding recordings of "On the sunny side of the street" (Pres, Hawk, Tatum, Armstrong), but I identify it with Sonny Rollins. It was one of my first jazz CDs: "Sonny side up". Quote
John L Posted March 31, 2004 Report Posted March 31, 2004 These Foolish Things: Lester Young I Can't Give You Anything But Love: Louis Armstrong I Must Have That Man: Billie Holiday My Funny Valentine: Miles Davis Over the Rainbow: Art Pepper Blood Count: Stan Getz Darn that Dream: Dexter Gordon My Foolish Heart: Gene Ammons Quote
jazzbo Posted March 31, 2004 Report Posted March 31, 2004 My Funny Valentine, It Never Entered my Mind: Miles Davis I was going to list a number of Billie Holiday renditions of standards, but really I think they're standards BECAUSE Billie recorded/performed them! Quote
brownie Posted March 31, 2004 Report Posted March 31, 2004 'You've Changed' belongs to Billie Holiday. Now wait a minute It belongs to Dexter Gordon Wish they had shared it at least once B) Quote
EKE BBB Posted March 31, 2004 Report Posted March 31, 2004 (edited) Ain´t nobody´s business if I do - Billie Holiday There ain’t nothing I can do Or nothing I can say That folks don’t criticize me But I’m going to do Just as I want to anyway And don’t care just what people say If I should take a notion To jump into the ocean Ain’t nobody’s business if I do If I go to church on sunday Then cabaret all day monday Ain’t nobody’s business if I do If my man ain’t got no money And I say take all mine, honey Ain’t nobody’s business if I do If I give him my last nickel And it leaves me in a pickle Ain’t nobody’s business if I do But I’d rather my man would hit me Than follow him to jump up and quit me Ain’t nobody’s business if I do I swear I won’t call no copper If I’m beat up by my papa Ain’t nobody’s business if I do Nobody’s business Ain’t nobody’s business Nobody’s business if I do In fact, there are many standards I identify with Billie Holiday ("Lover man" among them) I don’t know why but I’m feeling so sad I long to try something I never had Never had no kissin’ Oh, what I’ve been missin’ Lover man, oh, where can you be? The night is cold and I’m so alone I’d give my soul just to call you my own Got a moon above me But no one to love me Lover man, oh, where can you be? I’ve heard it said That the thrill of romance Can be like a heavenly dream I go to bed with a prayer That you’ll make love to me Strange as it seems Someday we’ll meet And you’ll dry all my tears Then whisper sweet Little things in my ear Hugging and a-kissing Oh, what I’ve been missing Lover man, oh, where can you be? Hardbopjazz Posted March 31, 2004 Author Report Posted March 31, 2004 April In Paris = Count Basie I remember him and his band in Blazing Saddles doing this number. Quote
John L Posted March 31, 2004 Report Posted March 31, 2004 (edited) 'You've Changed' belongs to Billie Holiday. Now wait a minute  It belongs to Dexter Gordon Wish they had shared it at least once B) Brownie: By chance, I was going to list You've Changed under Dexter in my post, but then thought about Billie! Darn that Dream is one of my favorite Dexter perfomances(Blue Note version), although for some reason he didn't play that number nearly as often as You've Changed. Add: Embraceable You, Out of Nowhere: Charlie Parker Blue and Sentimental: Herschel Evans Star Crossed Lovers: Johnny Hodges Petit Fleur: Sidney Bechet Chelsea Bridge: Ben Webster Rocking Chair: Let Pops and Little Jazz go to battle for it!
