jazzbo Posted February 3, 2023 Report Posted February 3, 2023 Not really a reissue I guess, newly discovered recordings to be released March 2: https://dottimerecords.bandcamp.com/album/at-the-swing-cats-ball-2 Wow! Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted February 3, 2023 Report Posted February 3, 2023 Interesting. I really like that band. Quote
medjuck Posted February 4, 2023 Report Posted February 4, 2023 I have a vague memory (most of my memories are vague) of hearing about these. Could the "working musician" who had them be Catherine Russell? Whatever the case I'm getting this. Quote
jazzbo Posted February 15, 2023 Author Report Posted February 15, 2023 Arrived from DOT Time yesterday. Sound is decent. Performances are as one would expect--worth checking out. Quote
JSngry Posted February 15, 2023 Report Posted February 15, 2023 Are these airshots? Or what? Interested, but wanting to better know what it is that is being "newly discovered". Quote
jazzbo Posted February 15, 2023 Author Report Posted February 15, 2023 Detailed information is on the website, seek it out. Yes, airchecks personally recorded to disc by Russell, found in a closet by his widow, masterfully restored by Doug Pomeroy. Quote

ghost of miles Posted February 17, 2023 Report Posted February 17, 2023 Oh man, Ricky Riccardi played one of these broadcasts at the 2020 Jazz Congress, and it was smokin’. Sound quality was OK—probably improved for commercial release, but I’d be fine with what I heard at Ricky’s presentation. Thanks for the heads-up! Quote

Was this one of the tracks of the Russell band backing up Louis Armstrong or one of the features for the band all by themselves? Quote

Armstrong was definitely featured, on vocals and trumpet. I can’t recall the tune, but it was a 1938 broadcast from Chicago, and Ricky identified it as coming from a Catherine Russell closet find.
