kenny weir Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 Hey, cool. But I don't think there's anything that unusual going here. As previous thread pointed, we read key words can get by without little ones. As en editor, I am always gratified how many words removed text without altering meaning. Quote

connoisseur series500 Posted March 30, 2004 Report Posted March 30, 2004 Really enjoyed seeing how I'm an idiot! That was fun. Only saw 3 of course! Quote
TedR Posted March 30, 2004 Report Posted March 30, 2004 That is amazing. I counted 3 at first too. Then after reading the explanation I carefully counted again and could feel my brain kind of "flip" past the word "of". Very weird feeling. So how many f's in this post? Quote
Upright Bill Posted March 30, 2004 Report Posted March 30, 2004 I got all 6, but I used to be a proofreader. The "trick" is to read it backwards. Quote

It's not a test, it's an illustration of how we actually read. Simon Weil Quote
king ubu Posted March 30, 2004 Report Posted March 30, 2004 If you found 4 you're a true Groover. so I'm back to groover status again or what? ubu Quote

Simon Weil I read an article about our ability to correct wrong words while reading - the title and the whole lead were wirtten copmletlely fcuked up, and you had no problem reading each word correct. ubu Quote
Alexander Posted March 30, 2004 Report Posted March 30, 2004 You think *that's* impressive, you should try to count the number of 'e's in the Perec novel "A Void!" Seriously, I only saw three at first too. Damn! Quote
GA Russell Posted March 30, 2004 Report Posted March 30, 2004 Maybe it's relevant that the F in "of" is pronounced like a V. I have a hunch that if the word were pronounced like "off" we wouldn't skip over the F's. Quote
TedR Posted March 30, 2004 Report Posted March 30, 2004 That's what makes English so damn hard to learn. Take away one "f" and it's pronounced "ov"; or "I read that red book" .....adding an "a" (a silent "a" at that) makes that much difference in meaning?!; "let's meet and eat some meat"....If I didn't know the language I wouldn't have the patience to learn it.
