Maybe it was a re-issue of a Revelation session? Quote

Teasing the Korean Posted September 5, 2023 Report Posted September 5, 2023 Spinning now. It is a Now Sound record, so it is good on that level, not so much as a jazz album. Still, a keeper, especially for the cover art! Quote
JSngry Posted September 5, 2023 Report Posted September 5, 2023 All non-cover material by Shorty Rogers. A&R is Jackie Mills, probably the drummer? Quote

Correct about the tunes. A&R is Jackie Mills; Hal Blaine is on drums. Chuck Britz, who was the engineer for The Beach Boys, among others, is the organist and engineer here. JSngry Posted September 6, 2023 Report Posted September 6, 2023 If it's the same Jackie Mills, he was a hot shot LA drummer in the mid-late 1940s. Played with Boyd Raeburn, Harry James(?), and was one some Gene Norman shows. I think he moved into production, etc. But not 100% sure. Quote
felser Posted September 6, 2023 Report Posted September 6, 2023 I would likely enjoy the album for what it is. Those covers are good to great songs Quote

Is it worth getting for DB's blowing, or does he just play the melodies and rock out? Quote

Was not giving it my undivided, but it is much more of an arranged pop album than a jazz album. The best tracks are the 5 by Shorty Rogers. There are three guitarists. There are parts where they are playing melodies in octaves, kind of like a 12-string guitar, but with a fuller sound. And there are a few tracks that feature baritone guitar, an under-used instrument IMO. Knowing at least a little bit about your tastes and interests, probably not for you, but it may be worth checking out the five Shorty tunes if you can find them on Spotify or YouTube. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted September 6, 2023 Report Posted September 6, 2023 I've heard it and couldn't get into it, and felt there was very little Budimir to be observed (compared to the Revelation sides). For completists only, but YMMV. Quote
sgcim Posted September 6, 2023 Author Report Posted September 6, 2023 Thanks, guys! It sounds like a cash grab CD that was reissued called "The Best of Dennis Budimir", which was in actuality the Worst of DB! Quote
