You probably know that pulpo is Spanish for octopus.

Didn't know that, but a look at his hands in the drawing on the album cover, not to mention listening to him, suggests how he got that nickname.  His given name is Gilberto Colon Jr. and he's best known  for his work with Hector Lavoe.
