Hardbopjazz Posted March 28, 2004 Report Posted March 28, 2004 I have to select and vote for Armstrong. I believe every artists owes his or her playing to Pops. He was, if not the first soloist. Quote

Popper Lou Posted March 28, 2004 Report Posted March 28, 2004 I don't know how to choose anyone. They all deserve to be in the jazz hall of fame. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted March 28, 2004 Report Posted March 28, 2004 Do we have to have a jazz hall of fame? Quote
Jazzmoose Posted March 28, 2004 Report Posted March 28, 2004 Do we have to have a jazz hall of fame? Well of course, we have to market this stuff! Quote
John L Posted March 28, 2004 Report Posted March 28, 2004 Do we have to have a jazz hall of fame? Do mean to suggest that great jazz artists are not worthy of the same enshrinement bestowed on sports heroes? Quote
gdogus Posted March 28, 2004 Report Posted March 28, 2004 I don't understand the question. Every one of the musicians listed in the poll is already in the Jazz Hall of Fame, as Harbop's second post makes clear. So... Quote

Every one of the musicians listed in the poll is already in the Jazz Hall of Fame, as Harbop's second post makes clear. So... How do these artists get choosen? There are so many others that don't show up on this list. Jackie McLean Andrew Hill Just to name two. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted March 28, 2004 Report Posted March 28, 2004 Do we have to have a jazz hall of fame? Do mean to suggest that great jazz artists are not worthy of the same enshrinement bestowed on sports heroes? OK. Do sports personalities need a hall of fame? One other question. Do you have to be dead and American to be in a hall of fame? Sorry. I'm a history teacher who doesn't like museums! Quote
GA Russell Posted March 28, 2004 Report Posted March 28, 2004 I enjoy Perry Como, but I don't know why he's been nominated. Quote
BruceH Posted March 28, 2004 Report Posted March 28, 2004 All the voting choices should be in anyones Jazz Hall of Fame. Quote
LAL Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 Frankie Trumbauer's name is missing from the list!! Quote

mikeweil Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 I don't understand the question. Every one of the musicians listed in the poll is already in the Jazz Hall of Fame, as Harbop's second post makes clear. So... Same here! Besides that, I see some names of doubtful jazz value on the list: Guy Lombardo, Sammy Kaye etc. may have been great artists in their own right, but jazz??? Quote
Tom Storer Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 Who votes on who gets into the Jazz Hall of Fame? I confess I was a little surprised to see Guy Lombardo, Lawrence Welk and Perry Como. And Martha Tilton? I'd never heard of her, but a little web research shows that she was a 40's big band singer with a fine reputation but whose career never really took off. I mean, more power to her, I'm sure she was great, but Hall of Fame? Quote
neveronfriday Posted March 29, 2004 Report Posted March 29, 2004 Hell, I voted for Basie ... just so he gets a vote. Cheers! Quote

And even gladder to know that being dead isn't going to hurt! Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted March 30, 2004 Report Posted March 30, 2004 I didn't vote because they all belong in the Jazz Hall of Fame. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 30, 2004 Report Posted March 30, 2004 Of course they do. I'd add Jackie Mc, Steve Lacy, Ayler, Cecil and Herbie Nichols. Is Mal Waldron on there? He should be -- one of the most consistently underrated and important pianists (not to mention musicians) since Bud Powell. Quote
Adam Posted March 31, 2004 Report Posted March 31, 2004 Ditto to Waldron & Lacy - about time for them to get into the real Hall of Fame. Quote
Guest ariceffron Posted April 1, 2004 Report Posted April 1, 2004 THE JAZZ HALL OF FAME IS A BAD AND STUPID IDEA. RE: YOUR LIST, ALL OF THE ABOVE QUALIFY. WITH JAZZ MUSIC, TOO MANY PEOPLE HAVE HAD MAJOR IMPACTS ON THE GENRE. A TRUE HALL OF FAME WOULD READ LIKE LON ARMSTRONGS LP COLLECTION- AND WHAT WOULD THE POINT BE, IF EVERYONE IS IN IT. ON THE OTHER HAND, IF ONLY A FEW PEOPLE ARE IN IT, IT IS BAD AS WELL AS OTHERS ARE LEFT OUT. SO EITHER WAY ITS A REALLY BAD IDEA. ITS NOT LIKE ROCK WHERE THERES A SELECT NUMBER OF BANDS THAT STAND OUT ABOVE THE REST THAT CAN BE INCLUDED IN A HALL. YOU GUYS BETTER DROP THIS ISSUE SO NO ONE GETS CRAZY IDEAS. Quote
