medjuck Posted November 17, 2022 Report Posted November 17, 2022 Benny's close friend Ira Nepus just sent me this https://paw.princeton.edu/article/glenn-dryfoos-83-just-released-jazz-great-benny-carters-princeton-recordings Quote
jazzbo Posted November 17, 2022 Report Posted November 17, 2022 Interesting! Thanks for posting. At first I read it as "Betty Carter" and got really excited. I'd love to have a lot more Betty Carter to listen to. Quote

It ended up being a happy accident. Quote
JSngry Posted November 17, 2022 Report Posted November 17, 2022 I've yet to be disappointed by Benny Carter's playing. Spunky! Quote

Dan Gould Posted November 17, 2022 Report Posted November 17, 2022 I do not understand the decision to make these unreleased Benny Carter recordings only available on streaming platforms. Nor do I quite get how that maximizes revenue to the Harlem Jazz Museum. Quote
mjzee Posted November 17, 2022 Report Posted November 17, 2022 Looks like at least some of the volumes are available to purchase via download from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/music/player/albums/B0B9FHD6C3?ref=sr_1_3&keywords=benny+carter+live+at+princeton&crid=168CIVCUUHQDB&sprefix=benny+carter%2Caps%2C82&qid=1668721051&sr=8-3 https://www.amazon.com/music/player/albums/B0BBZDVLGN?ref=sr_1_4&keywords=benny+carter+live+at+princeton&crid=168CIVCUUHQDB&sprefix=benny+carter%2Caps%2C82&qid=1668721051&sr=8-4 I also came across this intriguing but uninformative Amazon page; tune in tomorrow! https://www.amazon.com/music/player/albums/B0BF8KCLQR?marketplaceId=ATVPDKIKX0DER&musicTerritory=US&trackAsin=B0BF986DM1&ref=sr_1_6&keywords=benny+carter+live+at+princeton&crid=168CIVCUUHQDB&sprefix=benny+carter%2Caps%2C82&qid=1668721051&sr=8-6 Quote
miles65 Posted November 17, 2022 Report Posted November 17, 2022 There is a bit more on the NJM website Benny Carter: The Princeton Concerts – National Jazz Museum in Harlem (jmih.org) Quote
mjzee Posted November 17, 2022 Report Posted November 17, 2022 Turns out Amazon has all 8 volumes - do a search on Amazon for benny carter Princeton concerts. $8.99 a volume. Unfortunately, no discographical info provided. Quote

But the story on the National Jazz Museum of Harlem webpage is clear, "Mrs. Hilma Carter has made a gift of this music to the National Jazz Museum in Harlem to support their mission of preserving, promoting, and presenting jazz. It is her wish that the music be made available free of charge, and the museum is placing it across the world’s most popular streaming services." So why $8.99 & who is getting that $8.99? And before I am asked, I get why a label has to charge for physical product, but as noted, Amazon is selling a download. This would seem to fit closely with "streaming". The playing of a stream uses no more data than a download - probably less in fact. Quote

The copyright on the Amazon pages says "℗© 2022 National Jazz Museum in Harlem". But you can also stream them, assuming you have an Amazon Music subscription. I'm wary of buying these downloads because I bought 3 downloads of Savory tapes from Apple, only to subsequently see Mosaic release their box set. Perhaps these 8 Benny Carter dates will also eventually come out as a Mosaic box? Quote

If anything, should that happen, I'd probably just try to buy a copy of the Mosaic booklet then. Quote

And I do have Amazon Prime Music, but on November 1st, they rendered that service pretty much useless when they removed the ability to stream specific tunes, only allowing for a "random" playback. A few days ago, I clicked on a Joe Chambers tune from his Horace Silver tribute CD and got a tune from a gospel singer. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted November 18, 2022 Report Posted November 18, 2022 I have streamed /downloaded all 8 volumes of this Benny Carter material from Apple Music. Does anyone have the personnel information? I checked LORD, and was unable to find it. Quote

I actually thought that you could figure out from the shows because there would be a track that would include stage announcements. I can try to reach Loren and get him to give details. I'll let the board know. Quote

JSngry Posted November 19, 2022 Report Posted November 19, 2022 $8 for a download is not streaming. YouTube is streaming. What am I missing? That big band looks interesting. Hale Smith?!?!?!? Quote
Niko Posted November 20, 2022 Report Posted November 20, 2022 Thanks for looking up the lineups! Some of those volumes are well over 2 hours btw, so in total all 8 volumes are about 15 hours of music... Quote
Gheorghe Posted November 20, 2022 Report Posted November 20, 2022 Wasn´t Benny Carter very much on those late Pablo albums ? There was one with Diz, but I never heard it, and one I think under his own name with "Mellow Tone" on it. But did he really play alto AND trumpet ? I don´t remember nothing special about that "Mellow Tone" but it swung. Quote
