jazzbo Posted April 2, 2004 Report Posted April 2, 2004 Okay, I'll just share my decision not to get the Dizzy Reece's because I have all the material elsewhere as you do, and the booklet itself is just going to reprint the original liners, so nothing new really. . . I'm sitting tight with the versions I have, which are Conns and JRVGs. Now the VeeJay sets. . . I got these; I had no original vinyl of these, but cds both domestic and imported, and the set really does sound much better, and has additional material not on the earlier cds, plus you get good booklets. . . . I think they were well worth getting. Quote
king ubu Posted April 2, 2004 Report Posted April 2, 2004 (edited) Quick!! Someone give that man a fistful of Japanese Bethlehems to quiet him down!!! Send some of these my way, too, please! ubu Edited April 2, 2004 by king ubu Quote
RDK Posted April 2, 2004 Report Posted April 2, 2004 There is the thought - wild as it may seem - that Michael actually likes Ron's work... Quote
John L Posted April 2, 2004 Report Posted April 2, 2004 Lon: Is the sound on the Mosaic Vee Jay set significantly better than the Blue Moon series? I thought that Blue Moon did a good job, especially compared to the really trashy Charly releases of this material. Quote
jazzbo Posted April 3, 2004 Report Posted April 3, 2004 John, really yes, the sound is considerably improved. The only caveat would be for those who may have owned the original vinyl for years and years: they have remixed almost all sessions from the original three track masters and this contributes to the better sound, but it IS disorienting if you have the original mix burned in your brain. But they really DID improve the sound; on a thread about these sets from early today Dr. J says that he was surprised at the improvement cuz he thought the Blue Moons sounded good; so was I when I got my set. Big Al Posted December 9, 2004 Report Posted December 9, 2004 The only Reece I own is Comin' On. I like it okay, but wonder about the other dates. How do they compare to CO? Quote
jazzkrow Posted December 9, 2004 Report Posted December 9, 2004 BIG AL: ALL the Reece sessions are top notch that make up the Select. Star Bright & Soundin Off are every bit as good as "Comin On" IMHO... (Tough to find individually as well....) Get this Select-you won't regret it. Jeff Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted December 9, 2004 Report Posted December 9, 2004 "Comin' On" is my favorite Reece session (two sessions, actually). But everything on the Select is top-drawer in my book. I wish Reece had recorded more as a leader, on into the mid and late 60's. Also, it might have been interesting to hear him in the same transitional period (stylistically speaking) that Donald Byrd went through with "Fancy Free", "Kofi", and "Electric Byrd" (all from 1969 and 1970). BruceH Posted December 16, 2004 Report Posted December 16, 2004 I wish Reece had recorded more as a leader, on into the mid and late 60's. You and me both. Quote
pryan Posted December 16, 2004 Report Posted December 16, 2004 He plays more than nicely on Mobley's THE FLIP. That's an underrated album, IMO. Quote
BFrank Posted March 2, 2005 Report Posted March 2, 2005 I just recently got into "Asia Minor". How does this BN stuff compare to that? I've started thinking that I have to put this set on my "list". Quote
doubleM Posted March 2, 2005 Report Posted March 2, 2005 I think that the compositions were a little more "involved"/arranged on Asia Minor. The BNs contain more straight-ahead blues numbers, standards, and when it's all said and done...my ears do prefer the BN stuff. Quote
wesbed Posted April 2, 2005 Report Posted April 2, 2005 I purchased the Dizzy Reece select many months ago when it was a new release. I decided, tonight, to listen to the COMIN' ON session with Reece, Stanley Turrentine and Bobby Timmons. To my surprise, the COMIN' ON disk still had the shrink wrap intact. Jeez, I've never listened to this disk before? In conclusion, the combination of Reece and Turrentine is very good. Quote
Free For All Posted April 2, 2005 Report Posted April 2, 2005 To my surprise, the COMIN' ON disk still had the shrink wrap intact. Jeez, I've never listened to this disk before? Those Old Mills will do that to ya. B-) Quote
wesbed Posted April 2, 2005 Report Posted April 2, 2005 Those Old Mills will do that to ya. Feck. How does Reece get such a huge sound from his trumpet? When he plays, my mind pictures a regular-sized trumpet with a HUGE bell. Quote
sidewinder Posted April 2, 2005 Report Posted April 2, 2005 He gets an amazingly big sound on the 'Progress Report' Jasmine reissue of the Tempo sessions too. Very enjoyable stuff - well worth picking up if you see it. Quote
Tom 1960 Posted January 18, 2007 Report Posted January 18, 2007 Has anyone else purchased this recently and wish to add there thoughts? I'm thinking about it, but after purchasing the Parlan Mosaic, it will be awhile. Quote
sal Posted January 18, 2007 Report Posted January 18, 2007 I purchased it around the time it first came out. If you don't already have the material, I'd say its absolutely essential....one of my favorite Mosaic Selects. I had never heard Dizzy Reece before getting that set, and I was blown away. All the music is good. Quote
Kyo Posted January 18, 2007 Report Posted January 18, 2007 How does the set compare to Asia Minor, the only Dizzy Reece I have so far? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted January 19, 2007 Report Posted January 19, 2007 How does the set compare to Asia Minor, the only Dizzy Reece I have so far? These recordings are "treasures" of the BN catalog. "Star Bright" is a masterpiece and the rest aren't far behind. "Asia Minor" is fine. Quote
Tom 1960 Posted January 19, 2007 Report Posted January 19, 2007 (edited) 'Treasures' sounds like a serious endorsement. I'm trying to behave for now since I've made quite a number of purchases recently. It's just after reading all your glowing endorsements, you make it really difficult to for me to sit on the sidelines. Well, I'll do my best to resist the temptation for now, but will keep this high on the list for my next round of purchases. Continue to add your thoughts if you like and again thanks. Rooster_Ties Posted January 19, 2007 Report Posted January 19, 2007 I might force-rank the individual sessions in a slightly different order... (for my money, the two sessions on the last disc of the Select (which made up the single disc Conn issue "Comin' On!") are the 'masterpiece') ...but all in all, Chuck's right. Quote

I know what you mean. I thank God I managed to snag the Dizzy Reece Select during the Tower close-out sale. It's a seriously good Select, in fact I'd go so far as to say "essential." Quote
