Hardbopjazz Posted October 8, 2022 Report Posted October 8, 2022 On a number of Facebook groups, it is being reported Ronnie has passed away. RIP, Ronnie. Thanks for the music. It's been a tough few months with all the deaths. Quote
mikeweil Posted October 8, 2022 Report Posted October 8, 2022 R.I.P. He never got the recognition he deserved as a major baritone saxophonist, I think. Will spin this one tomorrow in memoriam - he's really great on this: Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted October 8, 2022 Author Report Posted October 8, 2022 That one I don't have. I will have to pick up a copy. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted October 8, 2022 Author Report Posted October 8, 2022 I do have that one. I will play it shortly. Quote

danasgoodstuff Posted October 8, 2022 Report Posted October 8, 2022 RIP, Cuber being on a date always meant there would be plenty of energy. Quote
sonnymax Posted October 9, 2022 Report Posted October 9, 2022 From early Benson to the Mingus Big Band, Ronnie always delivered. Thank you, and rest easy. Top row, center - a teenage Ronnie Cuber. Quote
HutchFan Posted October 9, 2022 Report Posted October 9, 2022 R.I.P. Sorry to hear this news. I always enjoyed hearing Cuber. Quote
Larry Kart Posted October 9, 2022 Report Posted October 9, 2022 Sad. Fine player, Fire and soul over a long career, Quote
JSngry Posted October 9, 2022 Report Posted October 9, 2022 That dude was a player. MUCH lover here. RIP Quote
soulpope Posted October 9, 2022 Report Posted October 9, 2022 Excellent musician .... R.I.P .... Quote
sidewinder Posted October 9, 2022 Report Posted October 9, 2022 Sorry to hear this. Liked pretty well everything I ever heard from him - the George Benson sessions, the Lonnie Smith Blue Notes and his work with the Mingus Big Band, which was the only time I saw him I think. RIP - I’ll spin ‘Move Your Hand’ and ‘Drives’ in memory today. Quote
Stereojack Posted October 9, 2022 Report Posted October 9, 2022 I first saw him with George Benson's quartet back in 1966. Oh man, that was 56 years ago! Great player, always dependable. R.I.P., Ronnie. Quote
miles65 Posted October 9, 2022 Report Posted October 9, 2022 I saw him with The Metropole Orchestra in Amsterdam. A concert of Charles Mingus compositions. Sue Mingus introduced the music. (6) Charles Mingus Tribute - Metropole Orkest - Boogie Stop Shuffle - YouTube One of the best concerts I attended. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted October 9, 2022 Report Posted October 9, 2022 Such a great player... I loved it when he came to Boston. I think the last time I saw him live was recorded and released as "Straight Street". I was lucky to catch the Mingus Big Band at the Time Cafe when Ronnie was in the band too, RIP Ronnie. Thanks for the great memories. BTW - the George Benson Columbia compilation, "The Essence of George Benson", has a lot of great Cuber playing on it. Probably the best compilation I ever bought (thanks Rob). Quote
Peter Friedman Posted October 9, 2022 Report Posted October 9, 2022 Very ironic that earlier yesterday morning I played Ronnie Cuber's - Straight Street" album, and later in the day saw the post that he had died. R.I.P. Quote
Gheorghe Posted October 10, 2022 Report Posted October 10, 2022 I think I heard him first on those 1978 Mingus sessions especially on "Something Like a Bird" where he plays solos and than shares chorusses with Pepper Adams. That´s really some great "bari" there. Quote

clifford_thornton Posted October 10, 2022 Report Posted October 10, 2022 Always liked his playing -- I believe I reviewed one of his semi-recent CDs, Boplicity, for the New York City Jazz Record upon release. He was part of an interesting (probably ad-hoc) band with Chick Corea, Pete Yellin, Teddy Kotick, and Al Levitt that appeared on that weird Levitts family band LP for ESP-Disk'. The jazz components of that record are pretty good. The hippie kid stuff is not so much my cup of tea. RIP. Quote
