Great piano / vibes records

I love the combination: joint piano and vibes front line, with intricate traded solos, with or without a rhythm section or an occasional horn.

There's obviously the classic Hutcherson / Hancock Blue Notes and the MJQ. I would also include Oscar Peterson and Milt Jackson on Pablo, Khan Jamal and Matthew Ship, and Burton's Hotel Hello with Steve Swallow on electric piano.

What are.some other examples I'm missing?

Martin Denny:

  • Exotica
  • Exotica II
  • Forbidden Island
  • Primitiva
  • Exotica III
  • Quiet Village
  • The Enchanted Sea

Nearly every 1950s record by Cal Trader on Fantasy.

Bobby Hutcherson's BN albums.

George Shearing's early MGM records.

Also, his Capitol debut "The Shearing Spell."

And any of this Capitol albums with the word "Latin" in the title.

I posted this on the "other" thread.

Walt Dickerson albums you may be missing. . . with Ra, Crowe, Hill, Davis Jr. and Dailey.

Jarrett and Burton on Atlantic is a favorite.

Lem Winchester and the Ramsey Lewis Trio and With Feeling.

Of course there are the Corea/Burton ECMs.

Ben Thomas with Neto on Madman's Difference.

Stefon Harris Kindred with Terrasson.

Johnny Rae Opus de Jazz Vol. 2.

I really enjoy that record Peterson did with Milt Jackson too. Vibes seem to tame the beast.

I do really think that the two instruments have a magical sympathy.

Eddie Costa's "'Guys and Dolls' Like Vibes," with terrific first period Bill Evans

"Under The Double Moon" by Anthony Davis and Jay Hoggard is a really good album. Do not know if it ever came out on CD and may be OOP but worth looking into. Spotify maybe.

A couple thing a little different are Mattias Stahl/Sten Sandell - "Gran Musik (Clean Feed) and Futari (which is Taiko Saito - marimba and vibes and Satoko Fujii - piano) "underground" (Libra).

This instrumentation is a favorite for me too.

Which of these are your favourites?

Chrystal Silence towers over the others for me.

Yes, and there's "Pike's Peak" with Evans and Pike--good one.
