Teasing the Korean Posted September 20, 2022 Report Posted September 20, 2022 I really love Andre Hodeir's music. I have the following four CDs, in chronological order: 1. The Vogue Sessions - two 10" albums from the early 1950s 2. Le Jazz Groupe de Paris Plays Andre Hodeir - 1956 3. Kenny Clarke Plays Andre Hodeir - 1956 4. Jazz et Jazz - 1960 How much more is there, and are the above albums the cream of the crop? Quote

Most of those titles are on either the Vogue disc, or the Kenny Clarke/Jazz Group. Any clue as to whether or not these are the same recordings, or if they are by a different group playing Hodeir's arrangements? The only title that I'm not seeing on the discs I have is "Alphabet." jazzbo Posted September 20, 2022 Report Posted September 20, 2022 It has been a long time since I listened to my copy. . . but. . . By the personnel I think these are not performances you have: Alto Saxophone, Bass Clarinet – Hal McKusick Baritone Saxophone, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet – Jay Cameron Bass – George Duvivier Composed By, Liner Notes – André Hodeir Drums – Bobby Donaldson Engineer – Rudy Van Gelder Liner Notes – Ozzie Cadena Tenor Saxophone, Flute – Bobby Jaspar Trombone – Frank Rehak Trumpet – Donald Byrd, Idrees Sulieman Vibraphone – Eddie Costa Voice [Voice Obligatto] – Annie Ross (tracks: B1) The liner notes also indicate this was an American project to duplicate the compositions with American players. JSngry Posted September 20, 2022 Report Posted September 20, 2022 What about "the Birdlanders" stuff that Esoteric/Period did? Kind sluggish in both sound and performance, imo, but it happened. Quote

jazzbo Posted September 20, 2022 Report Posted September 20, 2022 Fresh Sounds did collectors a big favor by releasing this along with what is probably the others you have in a 2 cd set. https://www.discogs.com/release/13417499-Andr%C3%A9-Hodeir-Essais-Complete-Paris-New-York-Sessions There's also this 7" EP of a soundtrack from Hodeir to consider: https://www.discogs.com/release/6483400-Andr%C3%A9-Hodeir-Les-Tripes-Au-Soleil-Bande-Originale-Du-Film Quote

Justin V Posted September 20, 2022 Report Posted September 20, 2022 (edited) I like this one with Solal, which I picked up after liking what I heard of Hodeir on that wonderful Vogue box. Edited September 20, 2022 by Justin V Quote

As I recall (would have to check among my LPs) the "Birdlanders" sessions were organized and supervised by Henri Renaud, not André Hodeir. Renaud at any rate was less academic than Hodeir. As for their "sluggishnes", different strokes (again ...) - but I for one prefer the U.S. sessions supervised by André Persiany anyway to those supervised by Henri Renaud. Differing tastes again.
