Those Japanese BN's are carpe diem. I think we're talking about US BN release brought to them by Zev. Quote

I get $93.23 or $18.65 each. Dusty's CD price is $20 each and they don't ship for free. That is a good deal. Their shipping (days) is pretty decent, within a week door to door. Quote

You're right, and the other new Elvin's are Japanese-only. I would expect the Amazon pre-order price to drop before it comes out. Edited October 22, 2022 by felser Quote
Holy Ghost Posted October 16, 2022 Report Posted October 16, 2022 Just ordered, really looking forward to this set. Quote
mikeweil Posted October 16, 2022 Report Posted October 16, 2022 I just pre-ordered a copy from JPC. Quote
JSngry Posted November 22, 2022 Report Posted November 22, 2022 I'm in no way enamored of Joe Farrell, but DAMN is he playing on this one. Totally dealing. Quote

mikeweil Posted November 24, 2022 Report Posted November 24, 2022 Yes, please elaborate. I cancelled my pre-order after hearing the samples as too much other stuff was on the way to my home. I'm not sure that I would listen to it more than once. Quote
JSngry Posted November 24, 2022 Report Posted November 24, 2022 He's really digging in, finding a higher gear than usual, imo. Maybe it's the live setting, maybe it's the opportunity to stretch a length, maybe it's a good buzz and/or a good reed. I don't know. What I do know is that after hearing Joe Farrell all the years and being more or less moved to indifference (literally), his playing here immediately pulled me in and kept me there Quote

Joe Farrell doesn't always turn up, but when he does, and he was pretty consistent for a while, I'll take him over his contemporaries mentioned above. Quote
JSngry Posted November 25, 2022 Report Posted November 25, 2022 Why are we thinking of them as his contemporaries? They weren't. He was older and far more established. Joe Farrell in 1960: Quote
JSngry Posted November 25, 2022 Report Posted November 25, 2022 1966, Farrell was here: https://www.discogs.com/master/544865-Heiner-Stadler-Brains-On-Fire-Vol-1 Quote

clifford_thornton Posted December 11, 2022 Report Posted December 11, 2022 Great set. I do have a bit of "crunch" in the pressing on my copy, a few spots in "My Funny Valentine." This has become par for the course in newer pressings -- stitching/non-fill. It is a bummer. Not enough of a biggie to return it but I wouldn't turn down a fixed version. Quote
JSngry Posted December 21, 2022 Report Posted December 21, 2022 I can't bring myself to pull this one out of the car. It's that good. Quote
Stompin at the Savoy Posted February 1, 2023 Report Posted February 1, 2023 The piano seems bad. I mean the instrument. Tuning or maybe just a bad piano. Conceivably the way it was miked... But the tone of it sounds bad to me. Nevertheless the recording has much to recommend it and I'll probably end up getting it. I was particularly interested to hear Larry Young on piano and he is playing pretty well but the piano. Quote
JSngry Posted February 1, 2023 Report Posted February 1, 2023 I think Pookie's was probably what, in most places, would be referred to as a "joint". Expectations about pianos in joints are wisely kept (where they are kept at all) on the low side of optimistic/the high side of pessimistic. Quote
Stompin at the Savoy Posted February 1, 2023 Report Posted February 1, 2023 (edited) It sounds like something you would find in a Shakey's Pizza parlor circa 1968. Oddly hollow and metallic. Edited February 1, 2023 by Stompin at the Savoy Quote
JSngry Posted February 1, 2023 Report Posted February 1, 2023 From Pookie's Pub in 1967 to your local Shakey's in 1968...old pianos never die, they just get moved down the food chain. Quote
