Onxidlib Posted August 22, 2022 Report Posted August 22, 2022 Just got an email from an artist agency which also worked for Rolf Kühn. He has died on August 18, 2022 in Berlin. This was confirmed by his wife and his brother Joachim Kühn. R.I.P. Quote
Gheorghe Posted August 22, 2022 Report Posted August 22, 2022 Oh I´m really sorry to hear that. I just had mentioned him in the "What are you listening" when I answered on a reply about Easter European Jazz , where I mentioned Rolf and Joachim at Newport in the early 60´s ...... Quote
mjazzg Posted August 22, 2022 Report Posted August 22, 2022 This is a shame. A long and fruitful career Quote
clifford_thornton Posted August 22, 2022 Report Posted August 22, 2022 Ugh. Very sad news but yes, a long and incredible career. What a musician. Quote
Balladeer Posted August 22, 2022 Report Posted August 22, 2022 Jahrhundertfigur! So we call in Germany those rare, exceptional artists - like Rolf Kühn is in many ways: His own history (East-/West-Germany), one of the first Europeans to succeed in the US, in his case with Benny Goodman in N.Y, enormously versatile (works for radio, tv, theatre), played with the big ones like Mangelsdorff, NHOP, Corea, Randy Brecker and finally with the young generation of German jazz up til high age (comparable with Art Blakey!), sticked to clarinet all his life, never switched to tenor. Above all his always natural, friendly way. RIP, Rolf Kühn Quote
mikeweil Posted August 22, 2022 Report Posted August 22, 2022 An extraordinary jazz life! I read the sad news this morning when the Darmstadt Jazz Institut posted it on facebook. R.I.P Quote
Д.Д. Posted August 22, 2022 Report Posted August 22, 2022 Not too knowledgeable of his music, but what I heard I enjoyed very much. Love his Solarius quintet date. Quote

He worked with seemingly everybody, and everybody sounded like they were on fire when playing his tunes. Quote
