danasgoodstuff Posted August 18, 2022 Report Posted August 18, 2022 My personal 5 BNs: Hank Mobley, Slice of the Top Don Wilkerson, Preach Brother John Patton, Blue John Gachan Moncur, Evolution Bobby Hutcherson, Dialog But for newbies: Blue 'Trane Something Else Sidewinder Song For My Father Alligator Boogaloo and that still leaves out anything early, and anything post-revival, any Wayne Shorter, etc. No live and not much organ. This is hard. Quote
JSngry Posted August 18, 2022 Report Posted August 18, 2022 Is it hard because it's unnecessary? Quote

My first were Out To Lunch! and Unit Structures, both purchased at the same time. I think Smokestack was the third. Quote
BillF Posted August 18, 2022 Report Posted August 18, 2022 I had been buying jazz records for five years before Blue Note records became available in this country - in 1962 IIRC. They were first issued, with some publicity, in a small bunch which included these: I don't recall what was my first BN purchase, but very soon I was buying early sixties key Jazz Messengers albums. A friend ran up a huge debt with a store that let him have Jimmy Smith BNs on credit. Quote
nighthawk68 Posted August 18, 2022 Report Posted August 18, 2022 I see a number of folks picking John Patton albums. I'm aware of the Mosaic Select which collects his first three Blue Notes. I wonder why Mosaic never did a complete box on him? Quote

I seem to remember that's where I first heard the tracks from the exceptional That Certain Feeling session. Quote
