But for newbies:

and that still leaves out anything early, and anything post-revival, any Wayne Shorter, etc.  No live and not much organ.  This is hard.

My first were Out To Lunch! and Unit Structures, both purchased at the same time. I think Smokestack was the third.

I had been buying jazz records for five years before Blue Note records became available in this country - in 1962 IIRC. They were first issued, with some publicity, in a small bunch which included these:

I don't recall what was my first BN purchase, but very soon I was buying early sixties key Jazz Messengers albums.

A friend ran up a huge debt with a store that let him have Jimmy Smith BNs on credit.

I see a number of folks picking John Patton albums. I'm aware of the Mosaic Select which collects his first three Blue Notes. I wonder why Mosaic never did a complete box on him?

The Mosaic select goes deeper than that doesn't it? I seem to remember that's where I first heard the tracks from the exceptional That Certain Feeling session.

This’d probably be my favorite Patton leader-date — with Junior Cook, Jimmy Ponder(!), and Clifford Jarvis on drums.
