Teasing the Korean Posted July 19, 2022 Report Posted July 19, 2022 Is that from Perry's TV show? If so, my Mom would likely have been on that show. I would love to ask her about all the guests. Johnny Mercer was a guest one week. Quote
JSngry Posted July 19, 2022 Author Report Posted July 19, 2022 Indeed it was. 1962 Kraft Music Hall best as I can figure. You mom was a Raelette...er...Ray Charles Singer? Quote

Mark Stryker Posted July 19, 2022 Report Posted July 19, 2022 Man, great clip of Getz et. al. Thanks for posting. Quote
JSngry Posted July 19, 2022 Author Report Posted July 19, 2022 That is really some of the loosest Getz I've heard. Quote

She was on Perry's TV show and most of the records at that time, AFAIK. I think she would have been on the A-list for recording sessions as late as 1964, but it was down to whoever was available for the session that day. Session people back then sometimes wouldn't know if they were recording for a record or for a TV show. Growing up, the only Ray Charles Singers album we had in the house was the Command album Something Wonderful, from 1961. I remember they would spin this on an occasional Sunday afternoon. This album mixes some mildly-jazzy numbers with some overtly corny stuff. Based on what else I've heard by The Ray Charles Singers, this was typical. Edited July 20, 2022 by Teasing the Korean Quote

JSngry Posted July 21, 2022 Author Report Posted July 21, 2022 You think she might have been on "Poppa Loves Mambo"? That's a great record, due in no small part to the Anglo equivalent of the corro. The foci of the last few weeks has been Carla Bley and Perry Como. Oh yeah, "Wanted" - Them singers make it 3D. It's a section, just lake a sax section. People talk about using the voice as an instrument (as if that's wild concept or something), them group singers, hell yeah, that was a section. Sorry your mom passed so young. Smoker? Quote

Sorry your mom passed so young. Smoker? I think "Papa Loves Mambo" would have predated her association with Perry/Ray. Her run was around 1957-58 to 1964-65. She didn't smoke, although that generation lived its life in a perpetual haze of cigarette smoke. It was neither throat nor lung cancer. My Dad all but checked out after she died, and managed to exist for another five years. Aside from it being hard to lose parents at a young age, as a music lover and occasional musician, I have so many questions I would love to ask them. For example, they are on a Raymond Scott track on the Manhattan Research compilation. They had worked with him on Your Hit Parade. I never heard them mention his name, or if they did, the name didn't resonate with me as a kid. I think I've mentioned elsewhere that my Dad knew Dave Lambert and was on several Dave Lambert Singers sides, predating LHR. Quote
JSngry Posted July 22, 2022 Author Report Posted July 22, 2022 Did session singers get paid a doubling fee for whistling? Or did separate whistlers get hired? Quote

The singers generally whistled. I don't think they received doubling rates, but they did receive doubling rates if they overdubbed their parts to make it sound like a bigger group. This typically didn't happen, unless the group was mixed too low and couldn't be brought up in the mix (in the days of mono). Quote
JSngry Posted July 23, 2022 Author Report Posted July 23, 2022 Whistling in time like to play a part is not nearly as easy as it seems. Quote
