Larry Kart Posted May 10, 2022 Report Posted May 10, 2022 Anyone here hip to this Cuban singer-bandleader? P.S. accent grave on the final "e" -- thus probably pronounced "Mo-ray." Quote
JSngry Posted May 10, 2022 Report Posted May 10, 2022 Known and admired him for decades. He's a legend, actually. Quote
JSngry Posted May 10, 2022 Report Posted May 10, 2022 Probably not what he's "best-known" for, but the sides he cut with Perez Prado (late 1940s?) are really something. Prado went all-in on the Kenton influence, and More was more than up for it. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted May 10, 2022 Report Posted May 10, 2022 (edited) That's Beny, with one "N." He loved ron a little too much. As a ron drinker myself, I can relate. Here is his money cut. It doesn't get any better than this, trust me. I dragged home many, many dollar Beny More albums from the flea market, back when you could find this kind of stuff for a buck a throw. JSngry Posted May 10, 2022 Report Posted May 10, 2022 Moving this to Artists since there no "In Print" relevance to the topic as posted. 2 minutes ago, Teasing the Korean said: At 50 cents or a buck a throw, there's plenty to go around! And there's ample CD-equivalents to be found as well! Prado soon enough and willingly enough became a self-parody, but his earliest RCA sides (recorded in Mexico City as I understand) were something else. Fearless, one might say, perhaps. Quote

Fearless, one might say, perhaps. Agreed. He could still deliver the goods afterwards, but you really have to hunt for the money cuts on those records. The early ones were jazzier, more consistent, and less focused on giving the first trumpet a hernia. Quote
JSngry Posted May 10, 2022 Report Posted May 10, 2022 That Havana 3 AM record had an insane trumpet section, iirc, Maynard Ferguson AND Conrad Gozzo and I forget who else. AND it's basically kitsch-free. But it is DEFINITELY as loud as fuck. Quote

At one time, it was in every thrift store, along with Whipped Cream and Other Delights and Merry Christmas from Firestone Tires. Quote
