Ellington was apparently criticized for his score to Anatomy of a Murder, but he responded that they used his music in different scenes than he originally intended.

Haven't read that but it's a common practice.

Oliver Nelson, J.J. Johnson, Benny Golson, Benny Carter, Issac Hayes, Gerald Wilson and Hale smith all did Movies and TV.

Oh, no one was criticizing the music.  They were questioning Ellington's dramatic instincts, because of how the music was placed.  Someone other than Ellington made the decision to change the placement of the music.
