kinuta Posted April 23, 2003 Report Posted April 23, 2003 The Bill Barron line up looks great but I didn't like it at all. It doesn't hold up and is far weaker than any of his other records.in my opinion. Go for the Savoys instead. Quote
JohnS Posted April 24, 2003 Report Posted April 24, 2003 I agree with kinuta, the Barron disc is pretty dull, a set of bossas, all short with no real room for blowing at the simliar tempos. Very disappointing. Fortunately Fresh Sound have also released Now Here This with Barron and Ted Curson a much better buy which redresses the balance. Quote
jazzbo Posted April 24, 2003 Report Posted April 24, 2003 Well, being enamored with bossa nova lately, I did the Barron. Yeah, not much blowing, but sometimes I don't need a lot of solos, especially in bossa nova if the material is interesting, and hearing this musical in this style is interesting. But that's me. The Akiyosha / Kuhn I didn't really expect to like but it's very interesting and I like it a lot. I haven't heard the cd version of the Salvador, but I was pretty unimpressed with an lp version I've heard. . . . Quote
jazzbo Posted April 24, 2003 Report Posted April 24, 2003 And the Babs (though I haven't heard this cd version) is a HOOT AND A HOLLER AND A HALF. Nice record to have reissued! Quote
JohnS Posted April 24, 2003 Report Posted April 24, 2003 Thanks for the recommendation for the Babs Lon. I was only thinking about it the other day after listening to Three Bips and a Bop and to Babs with Bennie Green. I didn't know it had resurfaced. Quote
Clunky Posted April 24, 2003 Report Posted April 24, 2003 I agree with Lon and like the Barron disc but would agree with others that "nOw Here this" or the Savoy sampler "Modern Windows Suite" are better. Another recent Barron reissue is on Dragon "SWedish American Venture", stuff from mid 60s to 80s with various Swedish lineups. Recommeded ahead of the bossa disc. Quote
jazzbo Posted April 24, 2003 Report Posted April 24, 2003 The Akiyosha/Kuhn is very good. It has a sort of George Russell feel to me to the arrangements. Has guitar, two basses and two pianos and drums. Uses a few c and w themes, but boy is it NOT country and western! Quote
JSngry Posted April 29, 2003 Report Posted April 29, 2003 What's the story with the Dauntless label? Who, what, when, where, etc.? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted April 29, 2003 Report Posted April 29, 2003 IIRC, it was a sub of Audio Fidelity and some, if not all sessions were produced by Tom Wilson. Quote
