Late Posted March 23, 2022 Report Posted March 23, 2022 (edited) For those interested in the roots of ska, rocksteady, and early Jamaican music in general, I highly recommend checking out Dub Store Records. The label is based out of a store in Tokyo, and has a website. I'm not sure if they're still operating, but many of their releases (besides the numerous 45 singles) came out on compact disc in the 2010's and are terrific. One compilation I recommend is Kentone Ska From Federal Records: Another excellent "dub" instrumental record is Errol Brown's Orthodox Dub. (For Bauhaus fans—you'll hear where they got some of their inspiration.) Anybody else here familiar with Dub Store? Their discs are fairly expensive and mostly out-of-print, but ImportCDs still carries a fair amount. Edited March 24, 2022 by Late Dub Quote
Dub Modal Posted March 24, 2022 Report Posted March 24, 2022 Yes, very familiar but due to prices I’ve only done downloads or streams. Orthodox Dub is excellent and was a priority for me when they reissued it. Quote
Dub Modal Posted March 24, 2022 Report Posted March 24, 2022 Actually - I do have some CDs and an LP from them: These Bunny Wailer tracks were really hard to come by before Dub Store reissued them. And then this absolute classic: The rest of their reissue catalog is amazing. The Jammy collections, obscure rock steady sides and variety of singles is impressive. Of note, the quality of their physical media is very dependable. Quote

There are two other records that I tend to think of as part of some (imagined) trilogy with Orthodox Dub, one of them by Errol Brown: Just as good as Orthodox Dub. ImportCDs still carries it. The other album seems much harder to find. It is: For this type of music, at least in my limited exposure, it doesn't get much better. p.s. I love this song. Had Ranglin been on, say, Blue Note ... well ... what a player. Quote
