felser Posted March 17, 2022 Report Posted March 17, 2022 (edited) Anyone familiar with these three titles and able to describe them more objectively than the usual Dusty Groove language? I'm likely in on all three on CD, as the label is of great interest to me, but would like to know more if possible. The Cox and the Woodard came out on BBE CD a couple years ago, and I picked them up then. Dub Modal Posted June 30, 2022 Report Posted June 30, 2022 Listened to the Kenny Cox album today. Once I got settled in it was really enjoyable. Flows nicely with Hammond’s Reflection in the Sea of Nurnen Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 30, 2022 Report Posted June 30, 2022 I have Location, which is good -- how are these archival releases? I had them pegged as more "jazz-funk" but maybe that is inaccurate. Quote
Dub Modal Posted June 30, 2022 Report Posted June 30, 2022 Not all together wrong on that. Outside of that CJQ album I’d say overall less jazz, more r&b funk esp if compared to Strata East. Also have that 70s spiritual jazz flavor in there. I’ve found a lot to enjoy from these. I think they track close to that Ranelin/Tribe vibe. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 30, 2022 Report Posted June 30, 2022 Right, yeah the Stratas I own are Location, the Bert Myrick, and Sphere. All of those I enjoy but they're all less on the funky side of things. Very little Tribe is in my bag. I'll probably pass on these but I guess it's good that they exist! Quote
JSngry Posted June 30, 2022 Report Posted June 30, 2022 y'all heard that Larry Nozero side? If you're into "interesting combination of ingredients", that's one to know. That's not as much a "recommendation" as it is an "awareness update". Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 30, 2022 Report Posted June 30, 2022 Time? I have heard it. Wasn't for me but it's certainly for others. Quote
JSngry Posted June 30, 2022 Report Posted June 30, 2022 yep, kinda how i felt about it, although it was interesting to me that he was in that circle and made that record on that label. the "jazz-funk" thing, especially during that time...some people were really aiming at "the people"...we had a lot of that going on here. And then there were the people who, that was all they could play. But they played it well, so it was all good. And then, still others who were intentionally "dumbing down (BOO!!!! to them!!!!). I do like to figure out "intent", though, just for grins, if for no other reason than I like to have at least semi-informed reflexes. Quote
Dub Modal Posted June 30, 2022 Report Posted June 30, 2022 Ha, listening now. This is that r&b funk flavor I mentioned. That “Tony” track - c’mon! Not quite smooth bc it’s got edges but there’s no focus on changes like I heard in that Myrick record. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 30, 2022 Report Posted June 30, 2022 Nozero seemed like he could play a fair amount of different things to me -- I guess I expected more of a modern/modal post-Coltrane thing (in a different bag) from him and when I heard that album I felt it swung too far in the commercial direction for my tastes. Then again, in its original form it is pretty damn rare for a commercial record! Quote
Dub Modal Posted June 30, 2022 Report Posted June 30, 2022 Listening to these, that Kenny Cox might be my favorite of the bunch. Quote
