Mark Stryker Posted March 9, 2022 Report Posted March 9, 2022 Reliable sources are reporting that Ron Miles has died at 58. Quote
ghost of miles Posted March 9, 2022 Report Posted March 9, 2022 Just saw this via a Facebook post from trumpeter and IU jazz faculty member John Raymond. Sad and shocking news. Quote
Rabshakeh Posted March 9, 2022 Report Posted March 9, 2022 Oh no. He really felt like he was doing well. Very sad news. Quote
mikeweil Posted March 9, 2022 Report Posted March 9, 2022 (edited) R.I.P. I first heard him on Ginger Baker and Bill Frisell albums and liked his playing very much. That's too young to die! Edited March 9, 2022 by mikeweil Quote
JSngry Posted March 9, 2022 Report Posted March 9, 2022 An original thinker, for sure. Not enough of those. RIP Quote

jk666 Posted March 10, 2022 Report Posted March 10, 2022 Oh man, he played on one of my favorite albums of all time. So glad I got to see them live a couple times, what an amazingly odd band. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted March 10, 2022 Report Posted March 10, 2022 RIP, Ron. Thanks for the music. Too young. Quote
Milestones Posted March 10, 2022 Report Posted March 10, 2022 R.I.P. I have heard Ron Miles on several Frisell releases, but not very much on his own projects. A talented guy, and from what I hear a wonderful human being. He will be missed. Quote
greggery peccary Posted March 11, 2022 Report Posted March 11, 2022 This is so sad. I spent last year on a huge Ron Miles kick. From his own stuff to Ben Goldberg to Frisell to Triology. I found his work with saxophonist Fred Hess (who was also based in Colorado) to be very satisfying. I also recommend his work on "Music Along the Way" by Rich Lamb. Quote
Ken Dryden Posted March 11, 2022 Report Posted March 11, 2022 I think that I have a broadcast or two of Ron Miles that a fellow board member shared with me a few years ago. Quote

Can I ask what the band is on those recordings? Miles seemed so comfortable and was always very much himself regardless of setting...at least based on my listening experience. My playlist of Ron Miles tunes as a leader/sideman is 272 songs strong and it/he is consistently excellent. Quote
Ken Dryden Posted March 13, 2022 Report Posted March 13, 2022 Sorry, it looks like I confused Ron Miles with Ron Horton, though I will have to check my file drawers downstairs. It's not present in my etreedb.org database, though that is far from complete. Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted March 13, 2022 Report Posted March 13, 2022 It's recently occurred to me that in some sense Ron Miles' playing can be seen as an extension of Don Cherry's in that it's the very opposite of the cliched trumpet player as egotist type of playing, not that I don't dig that too sometimes. What say you? Quote
BFrank Posted March 14, 2022 Report Posted March 14, 2022 The band was scheduled to play at the upcoming Big Ears Festival. They're still on the schedule, but now being billed as: Brian Blade, Bill Frisell, Jason Moran & Thomas Morgan: The Music of Ron Miles. As of their last update, they only state that he will be "unable to appear at Big Ears due to a medical condition requiring surgery and an extended period of convalescence". I assume this show will still go on. Quote
