Best *First* Year for Recordings - Sideman Only - Who You Got?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

So I decided to put a Frank Haynes compilation together - a single MP3 disc of all known recordings, in chronological order.

(Here's a great source about his discography -  since he doesn't solo at all on two of the known recordings, I am excluding them - helpful since I don't own them either:

http://www.jazzarcheology.com/frank_haynes/                   )

Anyway I looked at those first recordings, and what a year Frank Haynes had in 1961.

March - Dave Bailey Reaching Out session with Billy Gardner and Grant Green - later reissued under Grant's name as Green Blues on Muse.

October - Dave Bailey Bash with Kenny Dorham, Curtis Fuller - later reissued as Osmosis under KD's leadership.

October - Dave Bailey Two Feet in the Gutter session with Bill Hardman.

December - Les McCann In New York with Blue Mitchell and Stanley Turrentine.

What do you all think?  And can anyone think of a single year in which a soloist was on so many excellent sessions?  (Let's say for the sake of argument that we eliminate all "rhythm section" members discographies. I'm talking reeds/horns/guitarists, not pianists/bass/drums.

(Now watch, I am sure there are calendar years where Hank, Lee and many others have been as productive. But I bet some or all were leader dates and these are all sideman.)

Not sure what Freddie Hubbard's "best" year would be in the context you describe but for openers, let's try 1964. As a sideman:

Herbie Hancock, Empyrean Isles

Wayne Shorter, Speak No Evil

Art Blakey, Free For All,  Kyoto and Golden Boy

Eric Dolphy, Out to Lunch

Quincy Jones, Golden Boy and I/We Had a Ball

(Now add his own Breaking Point

---

Freddie as sideman in 1965

Herbie Hancock, Maiden Voyage

Wayne Shorter, The Soothsayer and The All Seeing Eye

Bobby Hutcherson, Dialogue and Components

John Coltrane, Ascension

Sam Rivers, Contours

Dexter Gordon, Club House

Hank Mobley, The Turnaround

Andrew Hill, One for One and Compulsion

Max Roach, Drums Unlimited

Quincy Jones, The Pawnbroker

Art Blakey, Hold On I'm Coming

Lalo Schifrin, Once a Thief and Other Themes

You could make a solid argument for Hutcherson in '63 too:

Bobby Hutcherson / The Kicker
Al Grey / Having a Ball
Jackie McLean / One Step Beyond
Eric Dolphy / Iron Man
Eric Dolphy / Conversations
Jackie McLean / Destination… Out!
Grant Green / Idle Moments
Grachan Moncur III / Evolution

Yes, but Dan was leaning away from "leader' dates in favor of sideman appearances in his initial argument.

Frankly, I'm tempted to add all the core members of the Ellington Band -- Hodges, Williams, Webster, Blanton, Nancy, etc. for the year 1940 based solely on the Ellington recordings. Could make similar claims for 1938 and 1939.

1956

Clifford Brown and Max Roach, At Basin Street (also some live dates that decades later were officially released such  as Pure Genius)

Miles Davis, Collector's Items

Max Roach, Max Roach Plus Four

Thelonious Monk, Brilliant Corners

1957

Max Roach, Jazz i 3/4 Time

Kenny Dorham, Jazz Contrasts

Abby Lincoln, That's Him

Dizzy Gillespie, Duets and Sonny Side Up

Donald Byrd appeared on over 100 recordings made between 1955-60. I don't have the time to pick out individual years, but here's the entire run from the Lord discography. Sure, there's a question of quality vs. quantify, but still there are dozens of dynamite recordings here.

Some sources incorrectly list a session on Crown CRS2021 from the mid 1950's as by George Wallington. Tracks were wrongly issued as by George Wallington, George Shearing and/or Bobby Freedman on many labels. In fact they were originally issued (with others) on Mode LP128 titled "Piano Playhouse". The pianists involved were Carl Perkins, Jimmy Rowles, Lou Levy, Paul Smith, Gerry Wiggins and Roger Fleming. All were solo piano tracks which were subsequently reissued on a variety of labels such as Deacon, Oscardisco (It) and Gallery as well as Crown.

Yes, but Dan was leaning away from "leader' dates in favor of sideman appearances in his initial argument.

Not only, but how about first year's recordings, too? Should have put it that way.

Clearly I didn't state this very well and I wish I could just start a new thread.

First recording year, sideman only.

My simple point was that Frank Haynes started very fast and made great records especially for someone almost entirely forgotten.

Yeah, Joe's 1963--thoroughly impressive.

And it seems 1962 would be Hutcherson's first year, but his first real flowering in 1963 was nearly as strong as 1965.

Some here have been picking any old year (not first year), and that makes for an almost infinite number of possibilities!

Given those constraints, I can't imagine anyone surpassing Joe Henderson in 1963.

If we're doing "first full year of recording starting with the official debut," then Joe's calendar would extend through March 1964 and that picks up two more dates as a sideman:

Freddie Roach, Brown Sugar

Andrew Hill, Point of Departure

--

Coda: I know Dan started by excluding rhythm section players, but, again, If we're talking about first full year year of recording starting with the debut, then Tony Williams is worth considering, Feb 1963-Jan 1964.

Jackie McLean, Vertigo and One Step Beyond

Herbie Hancock, My Point of View

Kenny Dorham, Una Mas

Miles Davis, Seven Stops to Heaven, Miles in Europe, and the Time of the Barracudas date

Grachan Moncur, Evolution

Yeah but part of that was my original post and thread title not being as specific. Otherwise I'm sure Mark wouldn't have hit us with 100 Donald Byrd's in like three year's time.

I can't seem to turn up a chronological accounting of Curtis Fuller's sideman appearances in 1957, and he made a number of albums as a leader that year too--so not sure he qualifies for the parameters of Dan's thread.  (Do you mean a first year *minus* leader recordings, or only musicians in their first year who made *no* leader recordings?)  Anyway, throwing this Night Lights link in because it was such an exceptional debut for any jazz artist in general:

Rookie Of The Year: Curtis Fuller '57
