Dan Gould Posted February 3, 2022 Report Posted February 3, 2022 (edited) So I decided to put a Frank Haynes compilation together - a single MP3 disc of all known recordings, in chronological order. (Here's a great source about his discography - since he doesn't solo at all on two of the known recordings, I am excluding them - helpful since I don't own them either: http://www.jazzarcheology.com/frank_haynes/ ) Anyway I looked at those first recordings, and what a year Frank Haynes had in 1961. March - Dave Bailey Reaching Out session with Billy Gardner and Grant Green - later reissued under Grant's name as Green Blues on Muse. October - Dave Bailey Bash with Kenny Dorham, Curtis Fuller - later reissued as Osmosis under KD's leadership. October - Dave Bailey Two Feet in the Gutter session with Bill Hardman. December - Les McCann In New York with Blue Mitchell and Stanley Turrentine. What do you all think? And can anyone think of a single year in which a soloist was on so many excellent sessions? (Let's say for the sake of argument that we eliminate all "rhythm section" members discographies. I'm talking reeds/horns/guitarists, not pianists/bass/drums. (Now watch, I am sure there are calendar years where Hank, Lee and many others have been as productive. But I bet some or all were leader dates and these are all sideman.) Dan Gould Posted February 3, 2022 Author Report Posted February 3, 2022 28 minutes ago, Mark Stryker said: Yes, but Dan was leaning away from "leader' dates in favor of sideman appearances in his initial argument. Not only, but how about first year's recordings, too? Should have put it that way. Clearly I didn't state this very well and I wish I could just start a new thread. First recording year, sideman only. My simple point was that Frank Haynes started very fast and made great records especially for someone almost entirely forgotten. Quote

Milestones Posted February 3, 2022 Report Posted February 3, 2022 Yeah, Joe's 1963--thoroughly impressive. And it seems 1962 would be Hutcherson's first year, but his first real flowering in 1963 was nearly as strong as 1965. Some here have been picking any old year (not first year), and that makes for an almost infinite number of possibilities! Quote

If we're doing "first full year of recording starting with the official debut," then Joe's calendar would extend through March 1964 and that picks up two more dates as a sideman: Freddie Roach, Brown Sugar Andrew Hill, Point of Departure -- Coda: I know Dan started by excluding rhythm section players, but, again, If we're talking about first full year year of recording starting with the debut, then Tony Williams is worth considering, Feb 1963-Jan 1964. ghost of miles Posted February 3, 2022 Report Posted February 3, 2022 I can't seem to turn up a chronological accounting of Curtis Fuller's sideman appearances in 1957, and he made a number of albums as a leader that year too--so not sure he qualifies for the parameters of Dan's thread. (Do you mean a first year *minus* leader recordings, or only musicians in their first year who made *no* leader recordings?) Anyway, throwing this Night Lights link in because it was such an exceptional debut for any jazz artist in general: Rookie Of The Year: Curtis Fuller '57 Quote
