Dan Gould Posted January 31, 2022 Report Posted January 31, 2022 (edited) I know this got discussed, I think in the context of this release having an alternate of the Curtis Amy/Paul Bryant collaboration, which Mosaic missed on their Curtis Amy Select: https://www.discogs.com/release/6197695-Various-This-Is-The-Blues-Volume-1 But what of any other PJ tracks? I was cross-referencing this one https://www.discogs.com/release/2390952-Various-Jazz-The-60s-Volume-I vs the CD release of In New York by Les McCann: https://www.discogs.com/release/7749815-Les-McCann-Ltd-In-New-York and clearly, One More Ham Hock Please, and A Little 3/4 for God and Country are shorter takes on the comp. Can anyone confirm different tracks, or different lengths listed to confuse people? Are there any other tracks that were unique to these comps? Edited January 31, 2022 by Dan Gould Quote
JSngry Posted January 31, 2022 Report Posted January 31, 2022 There's an alternate of "Almost Like Being In Love" from the Perkins/Lewis/Etc album that only made it out on a 45 EP. Totally different tempo and everything. With Pacific Jazz, I think the old adage about assuming an7ything holds true to a greater degree than usual. Quote

Well I am thinking about putting together a Frank Haynes sessionagraphy and at least that seventies comp will only set me back about $10 to do some further investigating. (And another take of the other tune with Stanley Turrentine would be nice, I must say.) Quote
JSngry Posted January 31, 2022 Report Posted January 31, 2022 Frank Haynes, eh? Good call! And again, don't NOT look for any 45s. Quote
Dan Gould Posted January 31, 2022 Author Report Posted January 31, 2022 This ain't Percy redux, believe that. I think I have everything except a Gerald Wilson, per discogs, but I wonder if Haynes got any solos anyway with Teddy Edwards in the tenor section too. Quote
bertrand Posted January 31, 2022 Report Posted January 31, 2022 Frank Haynes is awesome. I wish more was known about him. I have never even seen a photo. Quote

IIRC I read somwhere (Lord Disco?) that the track of the Harold Land All Stars with Jackie Davis is different on the two compilations it appears, not just edited/shortened. So far I have heard only the first of the LPs linked below. https://www.discogs.com/master/488486-Various-Blowin-The-Blues https://www.discogs.com/master/921874-Various-This-Is-The-Blues-Volume-1 With Richard Bock you never know. It could be edited, or a different take, or both. The two Les McCann tracks with Hutcherson and Amy are cases in point, too - they were never issued on any Amy or McCann LP. Cuscuna added them to the Les McCann in New York CD version. Quote
Dan Gould Posted February 8, 2022 Author Report Posted February 8, 2022 Well I received the comp that made me wonder and post about the thread topic. Appears that for "A Little 3/4 for God and Country" they made a pretty smooth edit straight to Stanley Turrentine's solo, so not only no "new" Frank Haynes but no Frank Haynes at all. One More Hamhock Please is really odd though and I am concluding that they did a remarkable editing job ... Amy's solo is about 50 seconds on the comp - much longer on the track that was issued. It actually lines up more or less perfectly, but on the CD issued track, there's a sort of a Blakey press roll into the piano solo, and same thing on the edited version. But there was no press roll at that point in Amy's solo, so as near as I can tell they cross-faded Amy out, because the press roll leading into the piano solo is present on the version on the comp. Very artfully done. How many channels were they recording at the PJ studio back then? Or maybe in 1978 they had more channels to work with when they edited it down. (Glad I only spent $8 including shipping on this record.) Quote
JamesAHarrod Posted March 27, 2022 Report Posted March 27, 2022 I wrote about the Bill Perkins / John Lewis alternates several years ago. https://jazzresearch.com/grand-encounter-the-alternate-takes/ Scroll to the last portion of the post for the alternates tales. Jim Quote
