medjuck Posted March 25, 2004 Report Posted March 25, 2004 Is there a Coleman Hawkins discography out there somewhere? I'm reading the John Chilton bio and he claims Bean's first recording was Mamie Smith's Mean Daddy Blues from April 1922 supposedly recorded shortly after he joined her band. But I just got a Mamie Smith cd that lists several earlier recording dates with Hawkins starting in in October 1921. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 25, 2004 Report Posted March 25, 2004 Bruyninckx lists Hawk as a "possible" alto player on 4 tunes from circa Sept 5 & 10, 1922. The first "positive" listing is an Okeh session listed as from "c. early May, 1922". He is listed on tenor for that date. Quote
medjuck Posted March 25, 2004 Author Report Posted March 25, 2004 Thanks Chuck. If I can display my ignorance: what or who is Bruyninckx? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 25, 2004 Report Posted March 25, 2004 Walter Bruyninckx is a discographer who's been publishing discos for decades. His current work (in progress) is a cd-rom titled "85 Years of Recorded Jazz". The final version should be out this summer. You can get some info here . Quote
Christiern Posted March 25, 2004 Report Posted March 25, 2004 On some of those very early recordings--inded even on the somewhat later Bessie Smith session--Hawkins is more a presence than anything else. One can't hear him play. Quote
