Apparently, the longtime jazz writer Don Heckman (and saxophonist) died more than year ago at age 89, though it's only now been confirmed.

I met Don Heckman many years ago in Detroit when he came for a weekend jazz festival. It must have been about 1965 or 1966..

Damn, I always seem to be the last to hear such news. Don was briefly married to my favorite cousin, Mary Gay Taylor, and I remember wonderful visits when they lived in Greenwich Village. A nice and well informed jazz man and it was a delight to talk with him as I grew up in New Hope surrounded by a lot of jazz performers and fans.
