Peter Friedman Posted January 24, 2022 Report Posted January 24, 2022 Three musicians come to mind that are highly skilled jazz players on both Vibes & Piano. Eddie Costa Victor Feldman Buddy Montgomery Are there others? One finger piano players such as Lionel Hampton and Terry Gibbs do not fit this concept. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted January 24, 2022 Report Posted January 24, 2022 Early in his career, Milt Jackson played piano on several recordings. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted January 24, 2022 Report Posted January 24, 2022 I seem to remember that Cal Tjader played piano on a date in my pile of records but for the life of me, I can't remember if that's true or just my imagination. Quote
BillF Posted January 24, 2022 Report Posted January 24, 2022 Vibes player Mark Sherman made a piano album in 2019 called My Other Voice. Quote

JSngry Posted January 24, 2022 Report Posted January 24, 2022 It's a pretty easy double, really, at least going from piano to vibes. Quote

Peter Friedman Posted January 25, 2022 Author Report Posted January 25, 2022 My friend Ted O'Reilly in Toronto reminded me that Don Thompson, usually thought of as a bass player, is also a very good vibes player and pianist. Quote

Expand That was the session for San Francisco Moods. I fooled a few here when including some from this album in a blindfold test. He played organ on the 1970 LP Tjader. Quote

Expand I can confirm that as I heard Don Thompson leading a big band in Toronto and playing both instruments. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted January 26, 2022 Report Posted January 26, 2022 Best known for his work on vibes, Baltimore native Warren Wolf is quite proficient on drums and piano. Not sure how much he's recorded on piano (I'm assuming, at least some, but not as the central focus of any one album, far as I know) -- but I've heard him play live -- including piano -- and he's the real deal. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warren_Wolf_(musician) Quote
Rabshakeh Posted January 26, 2022 Report Posted January 26, 2022 When I first looked at this thread, I got very excited because it thought it would be about records with a joint piano / vibes front line, like Khan Jamal's The River or Bobby Hutcherson's Happenings, or pretty much all the best MJQ records. It's one of my favourite combinations of instruments. Quote
DougFelt Posted January 27, 2022 Report Posted January 27, 2022 Bobby Timmons (piano and vibes) w/Sam Jones and Jimmy Cobb. Quote
