Rabshakeh
Sad to say that I have seen a few reports that say that the Belgian pianist Fred Van Hove, who played on some of the classics of the European avant garde, has passed away. mjazzg
That's a shame. I missed his recent-ish visits to Oto too
romualdo
RIP Fred Wonder if the Relative Pitch CD (The Corner) at Cafe Oto in 2015 with Roger Turner was his last recorded music? I'll play it today as a tribute. Fred Van Hove was a Belgian jazz musician and a pioneer of European free jazz. He was a pianist, accordionist, church organist, and carillonist, an improviser and a composer.
clifford_thornton
Very, very sad news. I interviewed him over email in advance of his NYC visit some years ago to play solo and duo w/ Lou Grassi. He was a kind man, not to mention absolutely brilliant. The only other time I saw FvH was in duo with Hannes Bauer in the early 00s at one of the Vision Festivals. Pretty heavy.

Very fitting, and a lovely record: https://dropadisc.bandcamp.com/album/front-to-front-sold-out

corto maltese
I have had the good fortune and privilege of attending countless concerts of his, both solo and with numerous other musicians. Almost every one of those concerts was an uplifting and invigorating experience. He was indeed a brilliant performer. I have particularly fond memories of the heydays of the Free Music Festival organised by him. What I heard and learned from Fred and other musicians there, on and off stage, influenced me profoundly musically. Thank you for the music. Д.Д.
Just downloaded and listend to this one from 1983: https://destination-out.bandcamp.com/album/was-macht-ihr-denn First of all, the sound quality is excellent - Baby Sommer's drums sound is so full. Second, this is a great work by an excellent ensemble (Van Hove, Mark Charig, Phil Wachsmann and Günter "Baby" Sommer). Highly recommended. Rabshakeh
Sounds good. I always feel that Sommer gets unfairly overlooked as a euro free jazz drummer great. His various Intakt records with Irene Schweizer are favourites of mine.
mjazzg
I couldn't agree more. I'm always going to give something with Sommer in a second look.

The line-up is as follows. Kenny Wheeler, trumpet, flugelhorn Manfred Schoof, trumpet, flugelhorn, bach-trumpet Tomasz Stanko, trumpet Bernard Vitet, trumpet Albert Mangelsdorff, trombone Malcolm Griffiths, trombone Paul Rutherford, trombone, tenor horn Evan Parker, soprano & tenor saxophone Gerd Dudek, soprano & tenor saxophone, flute Michel Pilz, bass clarinet, flute, soprano saxophone Heinz Sauer, baritone, tenor & alto saxophone Peter Brötzmann, tenor & baritone saxophone, bassetthorn Derek Bailey, guitar Alexander Von Schlippenbach, piano, percussion J.B. "Buschi" Niebergall, bass, bass trombone Peter Kowald, bass, tuba Arjen Gorter , bass,electric-bass Han Bennink, drums, shell-horn, dhung, gachi Paul Lovens, drums, percussion Joachim-Ernst Berendt, announcement At the concert at least three titles were recorded and filmed. 1. Globe Unity 70 (A. von Schlippenbach) 17:51 2. Ode (M. Schoof) 12:54 3. Drunken in the Morning Sunrise (P. Brötzmann) 9:53 Recorded on November 7, 1970 at the Kongresshalle, Berlin. (track 1 was released on Atavistic [UMS/ALP 223CD]) Kowald is playing his tuba on "Drunken in the morning sunrise". The title of Brötzmann's tune "Drunken in the Morning Sunrise" reminds me about the circumstances for the recording sessions of "Machine Gun". Brötzmann and Buschi Niebergall went - after the first part of the session - for some beers. Eventually they took shelter for a nap at a building lot. Next morning Niebergall and Brötzmann woke up, had a mouthful of beer and went back to the "Lila Eule" for the second part of their recording session. But maybe the title is a general allusion to such a situation which should have happened quite frequently during those times. A truncated version of Ode is also available at youtube. Don't know how to add a video/link here so if interested please follow: Ode by M.Schoof Edited February 5, 2022 by Onxidlib

Even greater than the trio performance. Han Bennink is the greatest anything ever.
