clifford_thornton
Vibraphonist and composer Khan Jamal has died at 75 according to Brewerytown Beats, the record store and label that was working closely with him in recent years. I'd heard he was having serious health issues so I guess it's not a shock, but 2022 is starting off to be quite a bummer. RIP.
Rabshakeh
Oh no. A great musician and a stalwart. As well as his great leader dates, I’ve been very much enjoying him on Dwight James’ the Inner Heat over the past few weeks.
clifford_thornton
yeah, that Dwight James album is good. I always dug his playing as well; saw him once with Jemeel Moondoc -- same band that recorded Revolt of the Negro Lawn Jockeys (great) -- and possibly on another occasion I'm not flashing on at the moment. We must've crossed paths! This was ca.2000-2002. They used to play in the old Jazz Gallery on Hudson St., if my memory is not fooling me. It was a very good band! clifford_thornton
yeah, I'm sure we must've been in the same room. I saw them at the Knitting Factory in 2001 for the Vision Festival.
mjazzg
Enjoyed everything I heard him play. Another loss, 2022 can stop right now
Dmitry
The most memorable night I had at the Knit was in 2002 - Dr. Art Davis Dick Griffin James Carter Dave Burrell Cecil Brooks Candido (!!!!) It was an amazing night! They played a 30 minute long version of Africa, and Jimi Hendrix's Purple Haze.

In believe we both saw him in 2018. Same night as the Nu Band with Mark Whitecage? Or a different vibes player? William & Hamid also played that night with 2 trumpeters IIRC
JSngry
Consistently fine player, RIP, and stop it 2022, goddamit, or at least back off for a little while.

colinmce
RIP. Lots of love out there for Sounds of Liberation, Drum Dance, and Infinity, and people are getting hip to the 70s Steeplechases, but he made a number of very fine recordings for CIMP later in life in the company of compatriots like Byard Lancaster and Odean Pope that I hope will one day get some equal attention. It seems these days that the whole of an artist's life isn't appreciated as much as it should be.
Pim
Damn another great musician I really dig his playing. Love his funky free music. Time to spin Infinity once more in his honor. Sounds of Liberation was such a revelation to me. Love that band and that date Edited January 10, 2022 by Pim
Joe
This has been a brutal January. Thank you, Mr. Jamal, for the music.

It was an excellent concert, and Jamal's playing was the highlight - all these overtones... Love his trio album with Pierre Dorge and Johnny Dyani on SteepleChase, one of my most-listend jazz albums of the last 20 years or so. Carrott played live and on record with my friend Ruth Naomi Floyd, and I had a really interesting conversation with him during the recording sessions for one of her albums. Amazing player, I've never heard him captured nearly as well on record as he can play live. Jamal was a favorite of mine, have enjoyed so much of his work over the past five decades. Never got to see him live, even though I'm in the Philly area.
Holy Ghost
Speak Easy. It's a weird looking record, almost looks like a Toto record, but this record is incredible! Signed it too, glad to have it. And his work with Shipp and Parker are keepsakes.

mjazzg
"Give The Vibes Some" is on Palm and Soufflé Continu seem to be slowly working through reissuing that catalogue so I'm ever hopeful. We may get Baikida Carroll's "Orange Fish Tears" too, we can but live in hope
